Any Americana troubadour who comes from Okemah, OK—birthplace of Woody Guthrie—is already starting from a good place, and the debut album from John Fullbright finds the young songsmith headed firmly in the right direction. Fullbright seems equally comfortable churning out raw, gritty tunes full of earthy muscle and bluesy ballast ("Gawd Above," "Satan and St. Paul") and crooning quietly tuneful ballads ("Nowhere to Be Found," "Forgotten Flowers") that mix his folk/country flavor with a more melodically sophisticated, pop-derived palette. Stylistic touchstones seem to include everyone from Mickey Newbury to Loudon Wainwright III, but when a young artist starts out as promising as this, why bother trying to tie him down to a single sound?
