Smooth jazz has always drawn much of its inspiration from the ‘70s soul sounds of the Motown and Philadelphia labels, a fact that woodwind player Najee has proudly embraced. Suitably titled The Smooth Side of Soul, this 2012 release features fluid sax and flute work from Najee, silky production from keyboard ace Jeff Lorber and a guest vocal spot from Phil Perry on "Just to Fall in Love," which combines modern dance flourishes and disco beats with upscale Najee flute work. The set ends with the joyous "Sound for Sore Ears," which illustrates that, like his hero Grover Washington, Jr., Najee can also kick out tougher jazz jams when he wants to.
