Wish You Were Here is the ninth studio album by the English progressive rock group Pink Floyd, released in September 1975. Inspired by material the group composed while performing across Europe, Wish You Were Here was recorded in numerous sessions at London's Abbey Road Studios. Some of the songs critique the music business, others express alienation, and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is a tribute to Syd Barrett, whose mental breakdown had forced him to leave the group seven years earlier. It was lead writer Roger Waters' idea to split "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" into two parts and use it to bookend the album around three new compositions, introducing a new concept as the group had done with their previous album, The Dark Side of the Moon.
As with The Dark Side of the Moon, the band used studio effects and synthesizers, and brought in guest singers to supply vocals on some tracks of the album. These singers were Roy Harper, who provided the lead vocals on "Have a Cigar", and The Blackberries, who added backing vocals to "Shine On You Crazy Diamond".
The album became an instant commercial success and record company EMI was unable to print enough copies to satisfy demand.

This album is absolutely phenomenal. I have probably listened to the whole album a 100 times. Amazes me every single time. Although widely debated, I still think this is pink floyd's no. 1

I freakin' love this album so much I don't know what to do with myself. I almost fell out of my chair when I saw it was free during a week-long promotion commemorating 40 years since the album's release. I have the CD (for you kids out there, ask your parents what a CD is), but I'm more than happy to add it to my Google library.

If I live to be 100 years old I'll be listening to it on whatever kind of "virtual stereo" thing they come up with. 5 Stars all the way, everyday. The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think. Oh by the way, which one's Pink?

Classic but not the classic and thats good This is probably my 2nd favorite Pink Floyd album dark side of the moon being 1st. I like that this album wasn't trying to out do the dark side of the moon but more focus on record companies and how they dont care about music just sales. This album has much less sales but its one of the greatest albums, I have it on vinyl its so much better on vinyl

Shine On Following the largely successful release of DSOTM, the band opted to release an album dealing with themes of absence, the music business, and the decline in mental health of their former bandmate, Syd Barrett. Aside from "Have a Cigar," the overall tone of the album is very emotional, with tracks like "Wish You Were Here" and both parts of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" serving as prime examples of this. While it initially received mixed reviews, it has become a welcome addition to the band's catalog.

Pink Floyd's most complete album I've been in love, maybe even obsessed with the Floyd since discovering them as a young teenager. At the time and still to this day Wish you were here was and still seems like the best work they did as a functional band. Sadly after this album Roger turned on his band mates and took Pink Floyd and made it into something more personal to him. Animals is always a over looked gem and The Wall imo is really the last Pink Floyd album. What could of been if a over inflated ego didn't desroy this band.....

An absolute classic Probably one of the greatest albums of all time, Pink Floyd wastes no time and brings you into a masterfully crafted, incredibly layered, and hauntingly beautiful masterpiece with all the care in the world. Do not hesitate to buy.

What a great album Though not as good as Dark Side, Wish You Were Here is still a great album. Though I don't like Syd Barrett, the they tribute to him here are the best on the album (Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Wish You Were Here). The other songs are great, but maybe don't fit so well with the theme of losing someone. The album works very well besides some different lyrical themes, and Wish You Were Here is one of they're best songs. Definitely obe of their best albums

Shine On You Crazy Diamond This album is phenomenal, plain and simple. Most artists find inspiration in their lives but the men of Pink Floyd used a painful and heartbreaking period of theirs as inspiration, as well as a means of honoring their dear friend Syd Barrett. "Shine On" is by far one of the most beautiful pieces conceived by a rock group, and by any group of any genre, for that matter.Wish You Were Here and the others tie it together nicely as well, making an overall fantastic album. Shine on, you crazy diamond..

I had this on vinyl back in the 70's so how great to see it today. It isn't 'Dark Side of the Moon' but a creative and excellent tribute to PF's old band-mate, Syd Barrett. The longer tracks are superb.

This is an incredible album and the best Floyd ever did. I bought the album in '76 - I was about 14 - and wish I still had the "shaking hands" sticker (or album - but I wouldn't have anything to play it on now) that I stupidly stuck on a notebook or something. There's a disco cover of "Cigar" that came out in '80 that is pretty good too if you ever come across it.

Laughably awful. It plods along, seemingly cos they're too stoned to play properly, production is bombastic, the "singing" is moping personified, and the theme is hippy hypocritical. But they need your money so buy all the formats you can, incl one for the dog. Pleeeeeeaaaassseeeee.

Classic among classics! If you don't already own this CD then you're missing out! One of the four essential 'MUST HAVE' Floyd CD's. The other three being: Dark Side, The Wall, & Final Cut (some won't agree with that last pick so add Animals here instead if needed). PS: FOR THE BEST MINDBLOWING EXPERIENCE, HEADPHONES ARE A MUST!

Although DSOTM is an incredible album, one of the best ever, it has gotten so much play over the years that some of the shine is off. WYWH is definately a very close second and tied IMO with Animals, a VERY under-rated album. Like another reviewer, I had WYWH initially on 8_track tape so I could listen in my car. Did anybody else out there start messing with the volume and start slapping the stereo when the mono AM radio/tv recording played the first time? These guys were incredibly talented. What's happening?, Where's everyone going?, Will we ever get to see such musicians again? What an incredible time it was. If you haven't heard this album, give it a listen, with headphones. And don't forget to listen to the words....And when you are done...do the same with their Animals cd.

Wish you were here Shine is arguably one of the greatest ballads ever put to paper . It is one of the Floyd 's finest moments , such a shame the man who gave birth to its very existence couldn't see what a beautiful beast he had sired . Yet one more proof that dope is for dopes . please abstain as it ruins so many lives. Thanks to David Gilmore, Nick Mason , Rich Wright , and Roger Waters for giving me a joy through out my life that I never could seem to achieve, unless I was in oblivion. Also thanks 4paying him his MONEY :-)
