Lambchop hail from Nashville, but they're neither a traditional country outfit nor a slick studio machine. Rather, the open-ended project absorbs the city's music (and its many musicians) in service of singer/songwriter Kurt Wagner's ever-shifting whims. Mr. M is dedicated to Wagner's fellow singer/songwriter and friend, the recently deceased Vic Chesnutt, and its songs are appropriately reverent and dour, and shot through with a wake's steadfast celebration of life. Wagner's songwriting, and the album's hints of a country accent, are spare and understated, but the more space left for Wagner's voice, the better: it's a rich, enveloping baritone with just a hint of twang caught in the throat—the kind of voice that could swallow you up in an offhand gulp between lyrics.
