A big comic book blockbuster demands an action-packed, even cartoonishly muscular soundtrack—and Avengers Assembled dutifully delivers. Less diverse than the onscreen superheroes, the soundtrack largely takes its amped, angst-driven alt rock from the '90s, when post-grunge ruled the radio and foil-embossed covers ruled comics. Soundgarden's first new song in 15 years opens with a gnarly guitar riff but quickly turns into a strummy ballad. Bush still sounds like Bush. Next to such steroidal company as Papa Roach, Scott Weiland's power ballad "Breathe" sounds downright thoughtful. Rise Against, whose rousing, raw-throated punk politics are slightly more complicated than Captain America's, are an odd standout. Fittingly for an epic good-versus-evil struggle, almost every song here is inflated with maximum, overdriven drama, guitar rock tricked out with the recording studio equivalent of CGI effects.
