Nelly Furtado reportedly recorded around 40 songs for her fifth album, The Spirit Indestructible, her first English language studio album since 2006's Loose. Her narrowed-down selections are a reflection of the Canadian singer-songwriter's creative scope, inspired by trips to Kenya, Jamaica and across the U.S. While the first two singles, "Big Hoops (The Bigger the Better)" and the motivational title track, don't display Furtado's strongest vocals, the single "Parking Lot" picks up steam, a sunny M.I.A.-like invitation to party in the parking lot. On the Salaam Remi-produced "Something" featuring Nas, Furtado coaxes "Baby, I could give you something," backed by a minor chord bassline. This dance-heavy album is an undaunted effort in the evolution of the playful pop muse.
