Although Kathleen Edwards' eloquent songwriting and plaintive Americana has its devoted fans on the denim fringe, Voyageur is poised to capture the sizable audience that's eluded the Canadian singer for the better part of a decade. Some credit goes to Bon Iver frontman and Grammy darling Justin Vernon, whose involvement—as sideman, co-producer and boyfriend—brings Edwards' a brighter spotlight. But despite the ethereal haze in which Vernon wraps the songs, it's the wry, scuffed-up charm of Edwards' writing that makes Voyageur so worthy. Tunes like the crushingly lovely ballad "A Soft Place to Land" and dour rocker "Mint" are from the hand of an artist whose time has finally come.
