Baby Got Back (In the Style of Glee)
The original cover (shame on you Glee) Sometimes a cover is just an homage, with little creative input, and sometimes, like this, it's a creative work. Taking a rap song and turning it in a heartfelt ballad while keeping most of the lyrics takes an artist. An artist that not only gave due attribution to the original song writer, but even got a license... unlike the Glee production crew, who even had the shamelessness of using his music and modified lyrics as-is. Well played Mr. Coulton, well played.
Great turnaround I love what Coulton has done with a fun rap tune, the "sweet" vocal style and melody contrasting these wonderfully nasty lyrics. Every time I hear the tune it's stuck in my head for days. Great work and now the proceeds will go to a great cause. The folks at Glee should be ashamed. Simple attribution is basic courtesy. Coulton is showing he's a class act turning their arrogance toward a good cause. Kudos!
Supporting the artist behind this rendition Some artists cover a song and it sounds good. Other artists cover a song, change it slightly, and it still sounds good. Then there is Jonathan Coulton, who took this song and changed into something new, something humorous and different; in short, it sounds good. Recently, Glee copied this arrangement on their show and did not credit JoCo at all. When asked about this, Fox's legal team responded with: "they're within their legal rights to do this, and that [Jonathan Coulton] should be happy for the exposure." Is it still exposure if it is secret? I'm no lawyer and I don't know how this whole situation will end, but I am a lover of music and this musician deserves a mention. So I am doing what I can to help, keep making music JoCo, and I'll keep listening.
Hells yes i bought this!!! and yes, its my second copy too. i actually bought it before i saw that he redid this to cover Glee's cover of him. Man i love this guy. i will HAPPILY add my .99 to his donation to charity, which i must say is the BEST reaction to this kind of situation that i have ever seen. This man is just awesome, thru and thru. <3 you JoCo!! ~H
Inspired and Hi-Larious Coulton has done this kind of thing before, way, way before. This is a re-release in the face of uncredited use of his interpretation by the people at Glee. While someone could have earned praise for recognizing the merit in JoCo's brand of music and bringing it to primetime FOX, they really, really dropped the ball when they make no reference of the cover's originator. Support the man behind this version of the song, so Glee won't have to (and because they probably won't ever, anyway).
JoCo For Life I've loved this song ever since I first heard it back in 2005 during JoCo's seminal Thing A Week year. It is exactly what I look for in a 'cover' song...take the original and do something interesting with it. Also, I enjoyed the original back in my college days...it was a favorite of a girl I was dating at the time. I remember being scandalized when her middle-school-brother started singing it along with her. Ahh, I was much more naive back then.... Anyway, one of my favorite JoCo songs, but Mandelbrot Set is still #1. I requested it at a live concert he played in Sellersville, PA a few years back...intimate event of ~50 fans. Best. Concert. Ever. Long live JoCo!
