99¢ Special was formed in 1991 by Exit, who began experimenting with electronic music after years of chiding it for not requiring talent. Darren and Exit met at the first live performance in 1992. Soon after, they began performing locally for a couple years, eventually bringing in Exit's old schoolmate Rayzor to fill in on keys. Already theatrical in performance, they stepped up their stage show with the introduction of Amy, who's main instrument was the audience.
Their live performances built a following in the Upstate NY area, and they began exploring the East coast, performing over 50 shows from Cincinnati to Providence, and from Rochester NY to Wilmington NC.
Label interest came in just as the band began to implode. Turbulent in nature, the chaos within ended up pushing the members of the band in different directions toward the end of the touring season in 1996. Since then, there was an attempt to reform in the early 2000s, but the amount of energy required was not there, and once again the band stopped performing.
Exit went on to form a studio based one-man band called One Cent Left, Darren went on to play in a few other bands and took to tattooing, Rayzor spent many years with Zadoc's Eternal Circus, and Amy went on to focus her artistic energies on the West coast.
