The song ‘Calling Me’ neatly ties together Aquilo’s first two years as a fledgling duo. It’s the first track Tom Higham and Ben Fletcher ever wrote together, and by heading up a new EP, its stirring, second form sums up the huge progression these two have taken on since day one. What started as an exercise in songwriting and production has since expanded into one of the UK’s brightest pop hopes.

Tom and Ben remain inspired by music that might at first hand seem distant from what Aquilo makes. Tom cites “dark music” as being a huge influence. “That’s what affects me and touches me the most,” he says, listing Explosions in the Sky as a big factor in the mood and production of the new EP. Ben’s in a similar frame of mind. “I can take positives from the songs that get you down. You can relate to it. And it’s the music that really speaks out,” he says.

Aquilo’s first steps have been defined by experimentation, but that doesn’t mean they’re settling into a default mode anytime soon. Ben sums it up by saying: “This EP is about testing the waters, really. We’re trying new things but we have scope to go other places. We’re not a band that just does depressing music. Sometimes we do smile.”
