Let’s start at the beginning.... it was Summertime in Handsworth Wood, Birmingham, UK, the year was something close if not exactly 1978 a very young boy was told to stay at home and watch kids TV, the usual bubble-gum TV of that era was on, Scooby, run-around, crackerjack, grange hill etc, low & behold a TV show from America appeared while flicking the 3 UKTV channels available... namely "321 Contact" & this particular episode was none other than KISS, i think it was the "love Gun" tour that was aired... the boy remembers being totally mesmerised at the whole spectacle quite a site but impressionable at the time. Little did the boy know how much the 4 who are 1 would be such an influence on his life in later years...
Moving forward through time to 1982 - Music was becoming an interest to Russell by this time influenced by the odd twist in music i.e. Adam & the Ants, Pink Floyd, Hazel O’Conner, 2Tone music, & yes even ABBA, Billy Joel was in the charts on TOTP with "Uptown Girl" i thought to myself Billy Joel he is cool & he has written some really great songs over the years.. I love that guy! Meanwhile back at school my friends were into Rock & Heavy Metal, at this point i was living in the Black Country, so a stable diet of Sabbath, Zeppelin, Judas Priest, & even Slade was the norm when hanging out as you did back then.. i remember to this day my friend wearing a T-Shirt it was a KISS t-shirt, it stuck in my mind for a while then one weekend my grandparents took me shopping, it was my birthday & i wanted to go & buy a tape cassette for my stereo my dad bought me.. i wanted to get the new Billy Joel album, at the time i think it was called “An Innocent Man" anyway sitting next to the cassette was another tape by a band called KISS, i recalled the TV show as a child, & my friend wearing the T-shirt, & the album was called "Creatures Of The Night" the album cover looked amazing with almost neon blue fluorescent faces... i thought what the hell, I’ll give it a whizz. The album changed my life forever! I found my karma, it was in Rock Music, & i knew there was only one thing i know i really ever want to do in my life! Be on stage, larger than life, writing songs & savouring every moment.
The next Christmas came along & i asked for a bass guitar, i wanted to play every song by KISS, i was the imaginary 5th member of KISS but they didn’t know it of course.
ive played Bass guitar from the age of 13, & it wasn’t until i was 19 that i bought a six string guitar i used to think there was no way i could play guitar as good as the Spaceman (Ace Frehley) or other influences like Jake e Lee (Ozzy Osborne), Ritchie Blakemore, Eddie Van Halen etc, i thought geesh if that’s the competition im gonna concentrate on song writing! So that became my aim.. To be a great songwriter rather than a musician, i hope one day i achieve it!, songs are what girls remember not musicianship, & it’s a level i thought i could live upto, i liked my taste in music, & thought i have an ear for a good riff, so my analogy was.. If i couldn’t dance to it, or i wouldn’t want to buy it? Delete it, or scrap it! - I think it was the great "Lou Reed" who said something like, "2 chords are the best, and 3 chords are ok, but 4 chords? That’s crap Jazz s**t man! - Nuff Said i thought!
Ive been playing in many bands, many styles, rock, metal, thrash, and industrial & toured Played many Civic halls, town Halls, clubs, around all corners of the U.K.
As a bass player / songwriter, it wasn’t until 2001 i decided to start playing acoustic quite a lot at this point i chose to focus on song writing & became the "Solo" artist you are, i hope, will be listening to at some point in the not too distant future! I hope you like it! This is the first of many official releases take care of yourselves, & each other! Maybe you can drop by & say hello if i get the good fortune to come and play “live” up where you are ;-)
