Disciples of post-rap, Dead Obies formed in Montreal during the spring of 2011. Months later, rappers Snail Kid, 20some, Yes Mccan, O.G. BEAR, RCA and producer VNCE put forth their bilingual mixtape Collation Vol. 1 and introduced fans to the mythological $ud $ale (Dirty $outh).
Their debut album Montréal $ud, $ud $ale's exalted message, was released via Bonsound on November 12th, 2013. In 2014, the album was nominated at L'Autre Gala de l’ADISQ for Hip-Hop Album of the Year and Critics' Choice Album of the Year, and was long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize. Montréal $ud's critical success helped place Dead Obies at the forefront of Quebec's rap scene.
After large-scale shows, a European tour, the mixtape Collation Vol. 2 - Limon Verde: La Experiencia, the Montréal $ud book and the animated web series 4:20 avec Dead Obies, the band released their sophomore effort, Gesamtkunstwerk, on March 4th, 2016. Recorded in part in studio and in part in front of a live audience during a series of three sold-out concerts at Phi Centre, Gesamtkunstwerk was also nominated on the Polaris Prize Long List.
