The story of Genesis is really the story of two bands, both wildly successful, if for totally different reasons. In the early '70s, under the leadership of a young Peter Gabriel in all his theatrical glory, the British group became one of progressive rock's most ambitious outfits, peaking with 1973's Selling England by the Pound and the following year's The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Both featured Genesis' epic amalgam of rock, folk, classical and early electronic music. Genesis Act 2 commenced after Gabriel, hankering to kick-start a solo career, departed in '75. With drummer Phil Collins taking over lead vocals, as well as assuming a central role in their artistic evolution, the group spent the second half of the '70s transitioning from cerebral prog to slick arena rock. By the mid '80s, the Collins-led Genesis were on MTV constantly, all the while scoring an obscene number of hits, from "Invisible Touch" and "Misunderstanding" to "Land of Confusion" and "Mama." Though the group has undertaken several high-profile tours since 1991's We Can't Dance, it was the last studio album to feature Collins and fellow core members Tony Banks on keyboards and guitarist Mike Rutherford.
