Antenna
Antenna Sampler
January's Antenna rings in the new year with a batch of artists to watch in 2013 as well as a round-up of 2012's biggest trends and late-entrant bests, both the heavily buzzed-about and the potentially overlooked.

In the former camp, maybe no rapper was more hyped in 2012 than Kendrick Lamar, who drops in to assist raspy-voiced, fellow Southern Californian Skeme for a verse on his hungry yet nostalgic "I Remember." Meanwhile, you might not have noticed indie electronica duo Peaking Lights' downbeat album Lucifer this year, but "Cosmick Dub" off the recent remix release Lucifer in Dub offers a chance to revisit their sound as taken to its logical end: a sub-surface bassline, drums clacking around the stereo field and singer Indra Dunis' voice stretched and refracted with echo. Meanwhile, more traditional jangle-pop composition comes into play on Savoir Adore's college radio-ready ballad "Anywhere You Go."

It wouldn't have been 2012 without dubstep, of course, and 12th Planet and The Others offer two chiptune-inflected takes on the thoroughly mulched-up sound. LA-based artist 12th Planet's "The End (T.E.I.N. Pt. 2)" briefly summons some goofy haunted house vibes, like a lost Castlevania soundtrack, while Brit producer The Others' "The Way You Make Me" dabbles with house vocals and 4/4 beats, before each delves into the familiar dubstep bass lurch.

Also in this month's Antenna we hear from ernest modern Canadian rockers Rah Rah and Alabama alt-country rockers Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit. Then there's angelic gospel singer Joshua Rogers, demonic dancehall MC Tommy Lee (who recently changed his artist handle to "Tommy Lee Sparta" to avoid confusion with Mötley Crüe's drummer), the dreamy guitar rock of The 1975 and much more to watch out for in 2013.
