The band's first work after their second studio album Time to Go Home, I Used to Spend So Much Time Alone was produced by Matthew Simms. Having the intention of starting to play more matured content comparing to their previous releases, the band completed the album during an 8-day recording session. I Used to Spend So Much Time Alone was met with generally positive reviews from music critics. Many critics pointed out the fact that the band's content got darker and more serious with the album, with some of them saying it was build on "what John Keats defined as negative capability".
Two singles preceded the album's release: the lead single "Different Now" on March 8, 2017 and the second single "Caught in a Lie" on April 4, 2017. To promote the album, the band released "5am" as a promotional single before the album release, and music videos for the lead single "Different Now", and for the non-single tracks "Used to Spend" and "Stuck". Chastity Belt embarked on a North American and European tour in support of the album.
