Some Cold Rock Stuf
J Rocc’s reputation as one of Los Angeles’ finest DJs spans back to the early ‘90s, when he helped lead a DJ renaissance as part of the Beat Junkies crew. While that era was typified by scratch-happy turntablists and noisy rap-rock jumbles—as in Beastie Boys’ “Intergalactic”—J Rocc was more subtle; his best technique was seamlessly blending songs together. On Some Cold Rock Stuf, he weaves disparate sounds together into peppy breakbeats, from disco and Indian bhangra in “Party,” to psych-pop and deep funk for “Play This (Also).” These songs are such effective party-starters that it’s easy to overlook J Rocc’s invisible hands, orchestrating it all.
