Apps

Notif

Eric Carboni
Notif is an app built for Android 4.1+ that allows you to create rich notifications for reminders, lists, passwords, pictures, or anything else that you can think of. The possibilities are endless!

NEW:
Notif History has been released! This will back up your text and list notifications and allows you to re-create notifications by tapping on them. FYI, this will not save picture notifications. Just text and list. Swipe to delete notifications because this free version will only show your last 10 :( Consider buying Notif Pro for unlimited backup!

NEW:
Create notifications hands-free with VoiceNotif! Just tap the microphone icon at the top and it will listen for a title and your content. It will create an expandable notification, just as if you typed it out yourself.

There are three types of notifications that you can create:
1) Text: Holds a title, an expanded title, and multiple lines of content when expanded
2) Picture: Holds a title, one line of content, and an image that you can take or retrieve from your gallery
3) List: Holds a title, up to 7 items, a summary, and one line of content when the notification is reduced

To expand a notification that isn't already expanded, simply pull down on it with two fingers. Note that by default, only the highest notification is expanded.

What is “ongoing”?
- The term ongoing means that the notification will be fixed in the notification shade. You will not be able to swipe it away or clear it, unless you click on it and press “delete”. If the check box is checked, it will be ongoing. If not, it will not be ongoing. Whether or not the notification is ongoing is not related to it being restored after a reboot.
What is “priority”?
- Priority, by definition, is the amount of attention a notification will receive. You can set the priority in Notif to default, minimum, or maximum.
- Default: Just the norm. Like when you receive a text message, it will appear and other notifications can appear above or below it.
- Minimum: These will always be fixed to the bottom and the icon will not appear in the status bar.
- Maximum: These will always be fixed to the top.

Upgrade to Notif Pro to get these features:
+ Notification editing
+ Unlimited Notif History
+ Over 200 icons
+ Integration with Android's share intents
+ QuickNotif - create and clear notifications from notification shade
+ Lots more to come
+ Only $1.49!

About me: I am a high school student. Updates will not always be as quick as you might like :)

A few known issues to be fixed:
- The resolution for pictures taken with camera in the Big Picture tab is pretty low. An easy workaround is to use your phone's camera app to take the picture and then use the "Get Picture" button in Notif to grab it from the gallery. It will be high resolution.
- Cannot get picture from gallery on Nexus 7

Permissions explained:
1. RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED -> Used to restore notifications on reboot

Heads-up notifications

Simen.codes
With this app, any device can get the heads-up notifications introduced in the new Android 5.0 “L Developer Preview”, no root required. But according to Addictivetips (and a lot of the users), this app "has done more than just replicate a feature of Android L. Even if you aren’t dying to try Android L and some of its new features, this app is worth a try".

FEATURES:
Displays the latest notification as a floating popup
Easily control which notifications to display
Quick actions: mark messages as read in one tap (Android 4.1+, doesn't work with all devices and apps)
Display the heads-up on lock screen as well
Battery friendly! (Email me if you notice significant battery consumption after installing)
Choose how long you want the notifications to display
Pocket detection / active display (causes a tiny increase in battery usage if you get a ton of notifications)
Display notifications on the lock screen until dismissed
Privacy on the lock screen
Multiple themes
Choose popup positioning and opacity
Don't display heads-up while using certain apps
Display a popup for the currently playing song
Compact/expandable mode
Full notification

While it's not translated into any of these languages, it also supports notifications in right-to-left languages.

COMMON ISSUES:
If no popups appear, please make sure that Heads-up shows up in the list of running services. If it doesn't, make sure you have enabled the service, and then reboot the phone.

If your device is running Android 4.2 or earlier, and you have other accessibility services running (such as Pushbullet), they might block Heads-up from receiving your notifications. Please try to disable them if Heads-up doesn't work.

Huawei, XIAOMI and MIUI users: please allow Heads-up to display popups under Settings > Apps > Downloaded > Heads-up. It might also be necessary to reset the app data/settings.

Uninstalling: If you find that the uninstall button is disabled, go to System Settings > Security > Device administrators > Heads-up, and tap Disable.

Other: Facebook Messenger, AcDisplay and PushBullet notification mirroring conflicts with Heads-up. And no, it doesn't display more than the latest notification (after all, this is meant for instant notifications when using the device, not as a lock screen).

KNOWN ISSUE - SAMSUNG - TALK BACK

On some Samsung phones (for example Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note) enabling our Accessibility Service causes the phone to speak actions like "folder opened" (-> enabling the TalkBack feature, even if it is turned off). This is a bug in Samsung's TouchWiz interface. We can't do anything about it and have to wait for Samsung to fix it. Many other apps suffer from this bug. You can follow the bug report here:
http://developer.samsung.com/forum/thread/samsung-devices-and-accessibility-services/77/204387

Based on feedback received from our users a workaround is to disable Samsung TTS in Settings > Apps > All Apps.

Android 4.3+ is not affected by this.

---

FAQ

Q: Why do I have enable the accessibility service?
A: Android does not allow access to the notifications by default. Using a accessibility service allows our app to bypass this restriction.

Q: It does not work!
A: Please make sure you enabled the accessibility service/ notification access and double check the code in the browser extension. If the problem persists you can contact us at hcilab@gmail.com.

Q: Can I pair multiple devices?
A: For Android and Chrome simply sign in with the same Google account. On Firefox you can enter up to three codes separated by commas. For example: CODE1,CODE2

Excited to see Google finally implemented this feature in the newest Android-L version. Doing it natively has a lot of advantages that a third party implementations like mine can't deliver. I'm also a little flattered by their design style http://i.imgur.com/7kMPxOp.png . Sadly this also means I'm stopping all development and support of this app, it's been a fun ride.

Display new notifications on your lock-screen in a clean minimalist list (similar to iPhone notification center). Instantly view the full text of new messages you received while the phone was locked. Customize content and appearance. Options to wake screen, or read messages aloud.

The demo video above provides a wallk-through of how to enable. Please read all instructions and the FAQ before reviewing or asking questions

To Enable (pick one option):
Widget Option: (ICS and above) Add LSN widget to JB4.2 lock-screen, widgetlocker, or any custom lock-screen that supports widgets
Wallpaper Option: Settings > (Display) > Wallpaper > Home and Lockscreens > choose Lock Screen Notifications -> Set As wallpaper
Accessibility ServiceMost content sources requires activating the LSN Accessibility Service (Settings->Accessibility->Lockscreen Notifications->On)
Consult the demo video if you are still having trouble

Features:
* Supports native SMS/MMS or any app notifications
* Wallpaper version does not require replacement lock-screen
* Widget version compatible with 4.2 JB lockscreens, widgetlocker
* Compatible with stock messaging, Handcent, and goSms
* Option to wake screen after receiving a new SMS or Email
* Smooth animations when adding notifications (optional)
* Fast response and low-power

FAQ:
I am not seeing any notifications on my lockscreen: Ensure that you have enabled the app using the wallpaper or widget options, activated the Accessibility Service, and have received a new notification while your phone was locked.
SMS and calls work, but Facebook/WhatsApp/Other content notifications don't work: Ensure you selected the appropriate content sources in the settings. Ensure the accessibility service is turned on. Try re-starting the accessibility service by turning it off and on.
Contact's photo is not showing: If your contact photos are coming from facebook syncing, 3rd party apps cannot access them. Use an app like SyncMyPix, Friend Sync, or Facebook Contact Sync to download accessible copies of contact photos.
My phone started speaking actions aloud, like "folder open" or "page 3": This is a bug with Samsung Phones, not my app. To fix it go into Settings -> Apps -> Find Samsung TTS -> Disable it.

DynamicNotifications

DynamicNotifications allows you to receive important notifications when your screen is off. When you miss a call or receive a new email/SMS, the display will discreetly light up to let you know, without needing to unlock the device. Most phones only have a pulsing notification LED that doesn't actually tell you anything about the incoming notification - with DynamicNotifications, you can immediately decide if something is important enough to act.

FEATURES:
* Notifications don't light up when your phone is in your pocket, purse, or face down to avoid accidental unlocks
* Select which app-notifications you'd like to receive via DynamicNotifications
* Change the appearance of the app (custom foreground/background color/image, show the date near the clock, change the main notification border style, and more)
* "Custom timeout": Select for how long DynamicNotifications should be shown (Premium feature)
* "Breathing notifications": Let not yet dismissed notifications reappear after custom intervals (Premium feature)
* "Night mode": Don't show notifications at night (Premium feature)
* "Hide additional details": Hide additional notification details (e.g. SMS text, sender) (Premium feature)
* "Use as lockscreen": Use the app as a replacement for your stock lockscreen (Premium feature)
* "Auto-wake": Automatically turn on the screen when you pull the device out of your pocket or pick it up from lying face-down (!) on a table (Premium feature)
* "Custom brightness": Select how bright the DynamicNotifications screen should be (Premium feature)
* "Edit swipe actions": Choose the action (e.g. unlock, dismiss, launch camera/custom app) for each swipe direction (Premium feature)

HOW-TO:
- Swipe right to see more details about the notification
- Swipe left to unlock the device (respects your unlock-security settings)
- Swipe up or down to dismiss the notification

FAQ:
- How can I make sure the app is working correctly?
Launch the app and follow the setup steps. Then, switch off your phone's screen and send an email to yourself from your PC. After a few seconds, the notification screen should light up!
- The screen sometimes turns on to the lockscreen, even if my phone is in my pocket
Please go to your phone's system settings --> "Security" --> "Device administrators" and tick the checkbox next to "DynamicNotifications". This will *only* allow the app to lock your screen, nothing else!
- When I lock my screen, nothing happens!
The app isn't a lockscreen replacement. It respects your security settings (PIN/Pattern lock) and only appears if you actually receive a new notification while the screen is turned off
- Will the app become available for Android 2.x, 3.x, 4.x?
The app is now compatible with Android >=4.0. If you're running Android 4.3, it will make use of the new "NotificationListenerService"-feature introduced in Android 4.3.
- Why can't I uninstall the app?
Please go to your system settings, select "Security", “Device Administrators” and uncheck the DynamicNotifications-entry. You will then be able to uninstall the app.
- My phone starts talking to me when I enable the app?!
This is a known Samsung-bug; Please go your system settings, select "Apps" --> "All" --> Samsung TTS engine --> Disable. If this isn't working, go to your system settings, "Accessibility", "Talkback" (make sure it's disabled), "Settings", and *uncheck* all options you see here.

Please let me know if there's something that doesn't work for you before leaving a review!

Expenses from bank SMS notif.

This application creates an expense reports from SMS messages sent by your bank to your mobile phone. Ask about availability of such notification in your local bank. The principle is very simple

* Number of expenses per day
* Sum of expenses per day
* Average daily expenses for current week
* Average daily expenses for current month
* You can navigate between weeks by sliding

SMS from your bank (so you can check the expenses chart immediately)
- Expenses widget which you can place on your home screen
so you don't have to search for the application every time
- Import functionality (import all previous stored SMS)

Notify Me!

TpmKranz
USERS WHOSE DEVICE SUDDENLY STARTS TALKING: THIS IS A BUG IN YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM, Notify Me! DOESN'T EVEN USE VOICE OUTPUT! PLEASE READ http://goo.gl/mMZYa OR CONTACT ME TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM!
Have you ever seen an iOS device as it displayed a notification, that the screen lights up and the notifcation is displayed on the lock screen, and thought to yourself that you want to see this happen on your Android device? Well, I did and thus createt this app - Notify Me!
Notify Me! is simple in design: You add apps of which the notifications should be displayed on the lock screen to a list, specify¹ the behavior of those notifications on the way and wait for a notification - it will be displayed as a popup in front of your lock screen.
¹No worries, the default behavior should suit most people's needs:
-Popups will only be displayed if the screen is off locked.
-Notifications will light the screen up.
-On Android 4.1+, popups of notifications that provide a bigger view will be expandable.
All of these settings can be customized! It is, for example, possible to make notifications just light up the screen, without showing a popup or to don't let notifcations light up the screen, with a popup waiting for you to manually turn the screen on, etc...
Generic aspects of popups can be customized, too. You can choose between a user interface with buttons and a user interface with a slider for interactions² with the popup. You can even set a custom screen timeout for cases when notification popups lit up your screen and you find your systemwide screen timeout to be too long for this popups.
²These interactions are possible: You can view the notification (this unlocks the screen and is effectively like tapping the actual notification in Android's notification area), dismiss the popup (unfortunately it is, as far as I know, no possible in Android to dismiss the actual notification this way) or expand popups of notifications that provide a bigger view (of course, only on Android 4.1+).
The only thing you'll have to do in any case is to enable Notify Me! as an accessibility service! Because there has been a lot of trouble with this in the test phase, Notify Me! will check on every app launch if it's accessibility service is running properly and provides you with a shortcut to the corresponding settings screen, if necessary. How often there will be a need for this depends strongly on the implementation of accessibility services in the Android build you are running! Whilst, during development, I only had to enable it once after the initial installation on my HTC Desire Z running CyanogenMod 10.1, I needed to enable, disable and re-enable it on my Sony Xperia Z (with stock Android 4.1.2) after the initial installation and need to disable and re-enable it after every reboot of the phone or update of the app - your mileage may vary! This inconvenience is, as far as I know, not my fault and either a bug or a security feature in some Android builds. <-(SHOULD BE FIXED IN CURRENT VERSION!)
If there are questions left, you should first consult the forum thread on XDA-Developers http://goo.gl/gmfHl before contacting me, as most questions have been answered before.
Notify Me! is free software, released under the GPLv3. If you would like to check out the source, you are invited to do so at http://code.google.com/p/notify-me/

Smart Launcher Notifications

GinLemon
You need to activate this service if you want to receive notifications in Smart Launcher.

NOTE 1: You need the latest version of SL installed to use this plugin. Please don't complain if you are using a illegal version!

NOTE 2: Samsung talkback issue:
Android Apps settings –> All Apps -> Samsung TTS engine -> Disable.

NOTE 3: In android there is no way to intercept notifications, we can only use an accessibility service as workaround. Doing this require some additional permission. I encourage you to check it from yourself on google, otherwise if you don't trust me please don't install this app.

Notifications Off

ROOT is required for the app to work.

Notifications Off is a useful utility for controlling application notifications in a centralized way. Instead of toggling notifications for applications individually from the settings screen you can turn off notifications for all applications from one place.

Using the new 'Profiles' feature you can keep multiple pre-configured profiles and quickly switch between them with a single click on a shortcut on your home screen. Or, you can completely automate it with Tasker integration.

Notifications Off can also automatically disable notifications for new applications as soon as they are installed.

Please do not leave one star reviews if it does not work for you. Instead email your device details (model, superuser app and version) to android@aboutmycode.com so that I can help you.

Please submit all feedback to android@aboutmycode.com

Talking Notification Girl

Spicedroid
Now Notifications can be presented in an animated Girl Avatar view which can speak out your text messages, mails and other events in a nice way.

More voice language is available by default under Android Settings -> Language & input -> Text-to-Speech Output.

We are working on the more intuitive animated avatars for fantastic user experience and you can expect advanced avatars in near future.

Please write to us developer@spicedroid.com for any issues

-------------------------------------------------------
If you find your phone is talking continuously even after uninstalling Talking Notification Girl App then follow the below steps

We are strongly believing that you have enabled wrong option "TalkBack" in the Accessibility service which is an integral part of the phone used to talk continuously for any events.

Can you please disable TalkBack accessibility Service under

Settings -> Accessibility -> TalkBack
or
Settings -> Accessibility -> Accessibility

You should enable only Settings -> Accessibility -> Notification Avatar - Free
-------------------------------------------------------

Please let us know if you are looking for any extra features, We will consider its feasibility and add it to this app.

Notification Light Widget

Notification Light Widget is a tool to enable/disable LED notification light on Android devices.

On some devices (such as Motorola Droid RAZR HD), a small number of users found that the notification light was disabled after logging into their google account if it was disabled previously on other devices with the same google account. This widget restores the ability to control the light on devices without an exposed setting.

On other android devices that already support control of the LED notification light, this widget could also be used as a convenient tool to enable/disable the LED notification light from the homescreen.

Illumination Bar Notification

Rundgong
Illumination Bar Notification: Have your Xperia illumination bar light up when you have received an SMS, missed a call or there is a notification from other Apps (WhatsApp, Calendar, Gmail, Facebook, etc).

The phone can light up the Illumination Bar, the regular notification LED and the Camera Flash LED.

*** Note: This app requires a Sony Xperia with illumination bar for full functionality. ***

*** If you run Cyanogen mod or any other custom rom check out the first post of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1706875

Support for different LEDs are hardware dependent. Camera flash will work on most devices.

Additional functionality in Illumination Bar Pro:
More colors. Any RGB color where hardware supports it
Personal Notifications (Incoming Call, Missed Call, SMS) - Dedicate a special color to anyone in your contact list.

The illumination bar can blink with different speeds or have a constant light depending on your preference.
You can also set the illumination bar light to "always on" while the screen is active.

In addition to SMS and Missed Calls, notifications from almost any app is supported.
The following Apps are verified, but most other apps should also work:
WhatsApp
Calendar
Email
Gmail
Google+
Google Talk
Facebook
Twitter

This app only have full functionality on the range of Sony Xperia mobile phones that have an illumination element (the transparent bar at the bottom of the phone).
Currently this is the following models: Xperia S, Xperia P, Xperia U, Xperia J, Xperia SP & Xperia L
Users have reported it also works with Ion & Sola and a few other models.

On Xperia U multiple colors are available to choose from (Red, Green, Blue, etc).
Xperia S and P only have hardware support for one color so they are limited to white light.

The bar will light up until the SMS is read, the call has been acknowledged or optionally the lights can be turned off when the screen is unlocked. You can also stop the light from the status bar.

There is also an option to stop blinking after a fixed time even if the notification has not been acknowledged.

If you don't want the bright light to shine when you are sleeping, you can set "off hours" when the light will be disabled.

App integration - Android 4.2 or Lower
FN is not able to make notifications disappear from your status bar. An app cannot dismiss another apps notification.
However, if you want any of your favourite apps to either make their status bar notification disappear when you dismiss the corresponding Floating Notification, or vica versa, you can point them to this page where they can add Floatifications integration:

Halo
This is NOT Halo. There are no popups of full apps and nor will there ever be. If that is what you are after unfortunately you will not find it here.
HOWEVER, if you are running a custom ROM which supports Halo then you there is a setting to open any notifications from FN in a Halo window.

Samsung Owners
- Some Samsung devices might start reading aloud, this is a known Samsung bug, it is not something I can fix however a number of possible fixes can be found here: http://goo.gl/mnzjI And you can see Samsung's response to the issue here http://goo.gl/l1E3d
- Swipe keyboard input on some Samsung devices might stop working (typing only), again, this is a known Samsung bug, it is not something I can fix

If you receive no notifications
Do you have other accessibility services enabled? If so disable them, enable Floatifications, then re enable them. If this fails to work please email me and I'll help you set it up.

Known issues (not caused by this app)
- If you are on 4.2 and using the screen on option, when you phone is locked, instead of the usual screen timeout of 10 - 40 seconds (depending on device) it'll instead use your normal display timeout (the one you set in your display settings) - this could result in battery drain is your normal timeout is long ( >1 min)
- If you are on Sense 5 and using the lock screen option, any touch can unlock the phone, this is a known Sense issue

Light Flow - LED&Notifications

Reactle
Light Flow allows you to take control of your notification LED colors and makes them successively flash one color after another.

It also allows you to set repeating sounds on vibration patterns for you notifications. You can also set a "sleep" mode or "on charge" where the lights and/or sounds and vibrations will not be heard or seen. If you've come from a Blackberry device and miss the features of BeBuzz / BerryBuzz then give LightFlow a try!

This program will allow you to control the notification color for the over 600 applications and system events such as:
* Missed calls
* Voice mail
* Calendar reminders
* gmail
* email
* SMS messages
* MMS messages
* Low battery
* No signal
* Google talk
* Facebook
* Twitter
...and many many more

See our website for a full list of applications supported:
http://www.reactle.com/p/features.html

It allows the colors to flash in succession, so if you have a new SMS and a missed call it can alternate between the two colors. You can also set which notification type has the highest priority and let it flash in just that one color.

It'll even push notifications out to your pebble smart watch, Sony smart Watch and the DashClock lock screen extension.

Known issues/Limitations
-------------------------
Samsung phones when accessibility is enabled may cause the phone to start talking, warnings about air view and a few other issues. These are confirmed samsung bugs (see here: http://developer.samsung.com/forum/board/thread/view.do?boardName=GeneralB&messageId=204387) but the app can be run without the accessibility service and still work (but with a reduced notification list)

Not all phones support all colors.
For example: Most HTC phones only support 3 colors and require "Rooting" and running the app in "direct mode"

Some phones can only light up the notification while the screen is off.

Some phones cannot have their notification light always on

Some phones cannot have their notification blink and it will always be on

Note that it will take over control of your notifications and you will therefore only get notifications for categories that the app allows.

★ We recommend you try the "lite" version first before purchasing to avoid any disappointment if it doesn't work for you. Some phones require root privileges to access the LEDs. ★

★ For the differences between this version and the lite version see here: http://www.reactle.com/p/features.html ★

★ If after updating you have problems we recommend you reboot your phone ★

** Most HTC phones require "direct mode" setting. Most gingerbread builds for HTC phones require root access due to HTC changing the permissions on the LED control files. **

** If upgrading from the "lite" version, please uninstall the lite version first but you can backup and restore settings between versions **

Root- Push Notifications Fixer

andQlimax
**** NEEDS A ROOTED PHONE ***

If your phone is not rooted, try the no-root version (see my apps).

100.000 downloads and counting!

Are you experiencing delayed push notifications from GTalk/Hangouts, GMail, Whatsapp (partial fix), Facebook, Play Store web install, etc? If so, then this app its for you!

It's FREE! No banners. No ads. Please consider donating to the developer (link in the app).

● What does this app do?
Push Notification Fixer (PNF) changes the heartbeat-interval numbers. The heartbeat interval it's a mechanism of android that keeps the push connection alive by sending a little network packet at specified intervals. PNF simply updates that interval numbers. By maintaining the push-connection active (for example every 5 minutes), push notifications will arrive on your device instantly.

Setting the intervals to their lowest values won’t make your notifications arrive more quickly. If the app is installed with the proper permissions, your notifications will arrive instantly regardless of a low interval.

If you have problems or questions, send me an email (ask.andqlimax@gmail.com) before giving the app a poor rating. I will answer you as soon as possible.

XDA support thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2142503

● How do I use PNF?
Install the app, accept Superuser permissions, choose your interval, select “apply,” and enjoy. The Mobile heartbeat interval must be longer than the Wi-Fi interval, once you applied the settings, the heartbeats are permanently changed and survive to reboots.

● Why were my notifications delayed in the first place?
Apps using Google's push service (Hangouts, Gmail, Facebook Messenger, e.g.) connect your phone to Google’s servers via one TCP connection (on port 5228).
To keep this connection alive, Android uses a periodic heartbeat to prevent the connection from timing out. By default, this heartbeat occurs every 15 minutes on wifi and every 28 minutes on a mobile data connection.
This is problematic because most Wi-Fi routers and mobile carriers will automatically terminate this connection after a short time of inactivity.
Because your phone is not aware that this connection was externally closed, you will not receive push notifications until this connection is reestablished when the next heartbeat is sent.

● How does PNF solve this problem?
PNF simply updates this heartbeat interval (stored on the GSF database inside android data partition) to the value of your choice, in order to maintain the push service connection (GCM).
Once set to the recommended 5-minute heartbeat interval, you should receive all push notifications instantly.
PNF does NOT run in background. PNF will have not affect battery life.

● How do I restore the default heartbeat interval value?
Before to uninstalling PNF, tap "Restore default heartbeats" in the app.

● Notice:
This app is provided with no warranty. You are responsible for what you are doing on your phone.

Emergency Notification

To grasp the importance of emergency notification, imagine this scenario: A shooter is on the loose at a college campus. Chaos reigns. To contain the situation, campus personnel need to communicate immediately and efficiently, not only with the students, faculty, and staff, but also the local police, federal law enforcement, and media. Effective emergency notification makes things "right," it allows the right message to reach the right people at the right time—facilitating the right response. Emergency Notification explains how.

This book offers must-know information for business security, senior management, human resources staff, government policymakers, and emergency planners, examining what, when, how, why, and with whom to communicate during crises. This text also covers risk communication, message mapping, information loading, audience comprehension, and practical issues like testing emergency notification systems.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Notification Services

Written by Shyam Pather, the Technical Lead for the SQL Notification Services Team, this book is based on his three years of experience teaching SQL Notification Services to new customers. This book is your complete resource for learning SQL Notification Services application development and the underlying architectural concepts.

Critically compare and contrast the public notification/disclosure programmes currently in operation in the UK and the USA.

Toryill Deacon
Sex offender policy is one of the most controversial areas of criminal justice policy. The popular hatred of sex offenders as a group is unparalled to any other kind of offender (Jung & Nutely, 2008, p. 191). Over the past few decades, in both the USA and the UK, there has been an unprecedented rise in public and media concern about sex offenders and in particular the risks posed by sex offenders on their release from custody (Kemshall & Maguire, 2003, p. 102). Managing those who are perceived as a danger to society has resulted in the introduction of legislation designed to regulate the behaviour of sex offenders. One of the most notable and widespread statutory reforms was the creation of sex offender registration and community notification laws (McAlinden, 2006, p. 193). Thomas (2005, p. 154) explains that sex offender registration and community notification/disclosure laws require certain categories of sex offenders to notify their names and address, and any changes to these details to the police in the community where they wish to live, this provides the police with a list of previously convicted sex offenders and their crimes. This information is then presumed to be useful when a new crime is reported in that it could help identify suspects. Furthermore, it could be useful in preventing crime and might act as a deterrent (Thomas, 2005, p. 154). The conditions attached to notification and degree of public disclosure permitted to the local community varies depending on the assessed level of risk but public notification/disclosure programmes are useful in that they make it possible for potential victims, their families, and community institutions to protect themselves against known sexual threats (Thomas, 2005, p. 154).

Mass Notification and Crisis Communications: Planning, Preparedness, and Systems

Denise C. Walker

Mass communication in the midst of a crisis must be done in a targeted and timely manner to mitigate the impact and ultimately save lives. Based on sound research, real-world case studies, and the author’s own experiences, Mass Notification and Crisis Communications: Planning, Preparedness, and Systems helps emergency planning professionals create a crisis communications plan that works by establishing upfront relationships with responders, enacting protocols, and utilizing technology to effectively message the intended audience.

Providing communication best practices to professionals, the book:

Reviews the challenges organizations face with communications in the face of various types of disasters Helps to outline the target audience of the communiqué Describes different communication techniques used throughout history during peace and wartime Provides methods for getting the right message across the first time Explores how social media can be a powerful tool in message dissemination Examines the legal landscape to ensure managers are in compliance with international, federal, state, and local regulatory requirements

Aligned with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s National Emergency Communications Plan—as well as the U.S. strategic plan to improve emergency response communications—the book provides recommendations to key decision makers given all considerations that must be weighed and factored in during a crisis.

Knowledge as Power: Criminal Registration and Community Notification Laws in America

Wayne Logan
Societies have long sought security by identifying potentially dangerous individuals in their midst. America is surely no exception. Knowledge as Power traces the evolution of a modern technique that has come to enjoy nationwide popularity—criminal registration laws. Registration, which originated in the 1930s as a means of monitoring gangsters, went largely unused for decades before experiencing a dramatic resurgence in the 1990s. Since then it has been complemented by community notification laws which, like the "Wanted" posters of the Frontier West, publicly disclose registrants' identifying information, involving entire communities in the criminal monitoring process.

Knowledge as Power provides the first in-depth history and analysis of criminal registration and community notification laws, examining the potent forces driving their rapid nationwide proliferation in the 1990s through today, as well as exploring how the laws have affected the nation's law, society, and governance. In doing so, the book provides compelling insights into the manifold ways in which registration and notification reflect and influence life in modern America.

The Mobile Mind Shift: Engineer Your Business To Win in the Mobile Moment

Ted Schadler
Mobile has reprogrammed your customers’ brains.

Your customers now turn to their smartphones for everything. What’s tomorrow’s weather? Is the flight on time? Where’s the nearest store, and is this product cheaper there? Whatever the question, the answer is on the phone. This Pavlovian response is the mobile mind shift — the expectation that I can get what I want, anytime, in my immediate context.

Your new battleground for customers is this mobile moment — the instant in which your customer is seeking an answer. If you’re there for them, they’ll love you; if you’re not, you’ll lose their business. Both entrepreneurial companies like Dropbox and huge corporations like Nestlé are winning in that mobile moment. Are you?

Based on 200 interviews with entrepreneurs and major companies across the globe, The Mobile Mind Shift is the first book to explain how you can exploit mobile moments. You’ll learn how to:
•    Find your customer’s most powerful mobile moments with a mobile moment audit.
•    Master the IDEA Cycle, the business discipline for exploiting mobile. Align your business and technology teams in four steps: Identify, Design, Engineer, Analyze.
•    Manufacture mobile moments as Krispy Kreme does — it sends a push notification when hot doughnuts are ready near you. Result: 500,000 app downloads, followed by a double-digit increase in same-store sales.
•    Turn one-time product sales into ongoing services and engagement, as the Nest thermostat does. And master new business models, as Philips and Uber do. Find ways to charge more and create indelible customer loyalty.
•    Transform your technology into systems of engagement. Engineer your business and technology systems to meet the ever-expanding demands of mobile. It’s how Dish Network not only increased the efficiency of its installers but also created new on-the-spot upsell opportunities.

Mobile is rapidly shifting your customers into a new way of thinking. You’ll need your own mobile mind shift to respond.

Unremarried Widow: A Memoir

Artis Henderson
In this powerful memoir, a young woman loses her husband twenty years after her own mother was widowed, and overcomes two generations of tragedy to discover that both hope and love endure.

Artis Henderson was a free-spirited young woman with dreams of traveling the world and one day becoming a writer. Marrying a conservative Texan soldier and becoming an Army wife was never part of her plan, but when she met Miles, Artis threw caution to the wind and moved with him to a series of Army bases in dusty southern towns, far from the exotic future of her dreams. If this was true love, she was ready to embrace it.

But when Miles was training and Artis was left alone, her feelings of isolation and anxiety competed with the warmth and unconditional acceptance she’d found with Miles. She made few friends among the other Army wives. In some ways these were the only women who could truly empathize with her lonely, often fearful existence— yet they kept their distance, perhaps sensing the great potential for heartbreak among their number.

It did not take long for a wife’s worst fears to come true. On November 6, 2006, the Apache helicopter carrying Miles crashed in Iraq, leaving twenty-six-year-old Artis—in official military terms—an “unremarried widow.” A role, she later realized, that her mother had been preparing her for for most of her life.

In this memoir Artis recounts not only the unlikely love story she shared with Miles and her unfathomable recovery in the wake of his death— from the dark hours following the military notification to the first fumbling attempts at new love—but also reveals how Miles’s death mirrored her father’s death in a plane crash, which Artis survived when she was five years old and which left her own mother a young widow.

In impeccable prose, Artis chronicles the years bookended by the loss of these men—each of whom she knew for only a short time but who had a profound impact on her life and on the woman she has become.

Final Salute: A Story of Unfinished Lives

Jim Sheeler
They are the troops that nobody wants to see, carrying a message that no military family ever wants to hear. Since the start of the war in Iraq, Marines like Major Steve Beck found themselves charged with a mission they never asked for and one for which there can be no training: casualty notification. In Final Salute, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jim Sheeler weaves together the stories of the fallen, the broken homes they have left behind, and one man's effort to help heal the wounds of those left grieving. But it is not a book about war, politics, or liberal vs. conservative. Achingly beautiful and honest, it is a book that every American-every human-can embrace.
