After a prominent Algonquin Bay politician, SHEILA GAGNE, reports her prosecutorhusband missing. Cardinal and Delorme quickly discover that the man has been abducted. A botched extortion attempt results in the death of their only suspect in the case, but they can't find a connection between the victims. Whoever has taken Sheila Gagne's husband sends her a video of him begging for his life but doesn't ask for ransom. Delorme tells Cardinal that she's taking a job in Toronto, and they both struggle with the idea of parting ways. The prosecutor is found dead, tethered out in a remote clear-cut and left to freeze to death.

After the grisly discovery of Sheila's husband and the death of a suspect in custody, Cardinal and Delorme believe they may be looking for a professional killer. That killer, NEIL CUTHBERT, now appears to be stalking a new target, BARRY LEBLANC. Cardinal and Delorme attend the autopsy of the first victim and then his memorial, looking for potential suspects. Cardinal has suspicions about a man named TAJ ROY, but he has an alibi for the first murder. Delorme runs into her old boyfriend, JOSH McNIDER (season 1). As the detectives struggle to connect the dots, Neil abducts not Barry but his elderly mother, ADELE.

Cardinal and Delorme find Adele Leblanc dead in an auto salvage yard, abducted and left to freeze to death just like the first victim. As they try to connect the two victims, Sheila Gagne and Barry Leciair meet in secret and discuss something in their past that connects them -something they haven't told the police. Cardinal and Delorme chase down leads trying to connect the killer and his dead apparent accomplice, who they believed served jail time together. SCOTT RILEY arrives in town, the man who hired Neil to kill these people. Neil abducts Josh McNider, Delorme's ex, along with his father KEN -who is also linked to Sheila and Barry by something in the past.

Cardinal and Delorme try to link Barry and Sheila to Ken McNider, a wealthy local businessman involved in forestry and mining. Josh McNider is left to die at the bottom of an abandoned quarryand struggles to free himself. After the police identify Neil, he meets with Scott Riley and tells him he's leaving town and not finishing the job. With Ken his captive, Neil orders Scott to kill him and a fight ensues, leaving Neil dead and Scott to takecare of the last remaining victims -Taj Roy and his teenage daughter MENA. Cardinal and Delorme race to the quarry and save Josh in time.

As the detectives close in on the secret from her past, Sheila goes into hiding at Taj's trucking company but believes they should go to the police. Cardinal and Delorme identify the killer as Scott Riley, a young man convicted for the rape and murder of a young woman in the Aaagimaak forest 20 years earlier. As they dig deeper, they realize Scott may not be guilty, and that the four mysterious strangers truly responsible were Sheila, Barry, Ken, and Taj. They kept their culpability secret in to protect a multi-million-dollarlogging deal. Cardinal and Delorme race for Taj and Mena, but Scott gets there first...

Scrambling to find young Mena and Taj in time, Cardinal and Delorme arrest Sheila and learn what really happened in the woods 20 years ago -an accident caused the death of the young woman, the cover-up led to Scott Riley spending 20 years in prison. Killing the loved ones of those responsible has become his singular mission. Trying to get inside his head, Cardinal and Delorme think they know where Scott might have taken his final victims. On a new hunch,they set off away from the search team, and find themselves facing Scott on their own, with Taj and Mena's lives hanging in the balance.
