What have we learned? We, particularly in the English-speaking world, currently live in an age where inconvenient facts are labelled "fake news" by leaders with a responsibility to do better, and yet, to the relief of those unwilling to face those facts. Where being an expert is denigrated and even vilified and cast as self-interested duplicity. But we see here what the upshot of policies like that can be. How long till we have our Chernobyl moment? Are the mounting deaths in the US and UK a form of that? Will the masses wake up? This is a beautifully-written, poignantly-acted cautionary tale to us all. I only wish everyone would, could, sit down and watch it. Even then, I'm afraid many would just come away with the impression this kind of thing only happens in countries like the Soviet Union... couldn't happen here. We're not like that, are we... Our leadership doesn't do things like this, do they...

Superb acting, storytelling, and cinematography. Explains what happened in layman's terms but with enough complexity that you can watch the whole series twice and catch all the subtle clues missed the first time around. Captures the time period perfectly and puts a human face on the often vilified soviet stereotype. Ends on a strong moral note that should make people think twice about their response to the current climate crisis.

This is the danger of totalitarian regimes that do not have any hesitation to sacrifice human life, truth, science. and ... for their grab to power.
