The Forsytes

Chance encounters for cousins Jolyon and Soames Forsyte, rival heirs to the family firm, set off a chain of events which threaten the stability of their lives. Each is faced with an impossible dilemma: do your duty or follow your heart.

Jolyon and Soames remain at loggerheads, Jolyon discovers he’s fathered illegitimate twins, Soames’s father plots to use Jolyon’s secret to discredit him whilst Soames, smitten by Irene, makes a hasty marriage proposal to avoid losing her.

When Jolyon insists on fulfilling his parental obligations, James tries to have him expelled from the company. June seeks solace with architect Philip. Soames promises Irene a move to Paris, support for her dancing, and the two get married.

Jolyon cuts ties with Louisa as Soames and Irene honeymoon in Paris. James is furious after Soames plans to set up a branch of Forsyte & Co. in Paris. But Soames, horrified by the ballet, returns to London early. June and Phil get engaged.

Disaster strikes at Forsyte & Co., causing clients financial ruin. Soames tells Irene James has a heart condition. June reveals Louisa’s eviction, arranged by Frances. Jo finds her a cottage instead, refusing to cut Louisa out his life.

Frances struggles to maintain her composure. Soames commissions Phil to build him an isolated country house, ignoring Irene’s suggestion they admit defeat in their marriage. Jolyon leaves the family for Louisa. Ann has another grandson.
