Empress Catherine has not been on the throne long and her position is under threat. A German princess who married into the Russian imperial family before usurping her unpopular husband, Peter III, in a palace coup, Catherine is seen by many as illegitimate and unqualified, not to mention a woman. But Catherine knows she is the best person for the job. With a skill and determination that belie her political inexperience, Catherine foils a plot to restore the former emperor Ivan VI, outmanoeuvres Minister Panin's efforts to place her petulant son Paul on the throne, and drags Russia into the eighteenth century with a series of liberalizing reforms. Catherine finds her match in Grigory Potemkin. The charismatic lieutenant demonstrates his courage in battle against the Ottoman Empire and his political skill in helping Catherine subdue the Pugachev uprising. It is not long before he replaces the duplicitous Minister Panin in Catherine's ear and the unfaithful Grigory Orlov in Catherine's bed. Catherine and Potemkin's romantic relationship ultimately proves too tempestuous. They come to an arrangement whereby each may take other lovers as long as it does not interfere with their special connection. Potemkin annexes the Crimea and becomes the de facto ruler of southern Russia, building new settlements and a navy on the Black Sea. When the Turks declare war again, Potemkin takes total control of the armed forces and orchestrates a decisive victory, but dies not long after. The grief-stricken Catherine becomes increasingly paranoid and despotic, fearing a revolution like the one in France. Her vain lover, Platon Zubov, tries to increase his political power but Catherine is wise to his tricks. The ever-weakening Catherine tries to change the succession in favour of her adored grandson Alexander, but Paul seizes the throne after her death and proceeds to trash his mother's legacy.
