Jack and his daughter Kimberly continue to deal with the trauma of Teri's murder, and the effect it has on their relationship. But with one phone call, Jack, who has been inactive since Teri's death more than a year ago, is called upon by David Palmer -- now President Palmer -- to stop another terrorist plot with global implications.

Jack rushes to reestablish his old undercover identity, but he is not welcomed back until he proves his loyalty with a shocking "gift." Kim hustles Megan away from the disturbed Matheson house. Palmer negotiates with a curious press, and makes a hard choice. CTU go-getter, Paula, gets nervous as the reality of the terrorist threat sinks in.

Jack's undercover work pays off when he joins a deadly mission. Kim risks everything to save Megan from her violent father. Kate Warner learns that she and her family may be in danger, as Reza's terrorist connections are confirmed. President Palmer's aide, Lynne Kresge, must find a way around Rayburn to issue a terrible warning.

Jack turns the tables and finds a key to the nuclear threat, while CTU suffers a critical setback; President Palmer uncovers deception on his team, and must make hard choices about who he can trust; and Kim learns that Gary Matheson has hurt his daughter more than she realized.

While CTU scrambles to recover vital information, Jack comes face to face with Nina; Palmer brings a new man, Roger Stanton, onto his team; Kim ignores Gary's threats and refuses to abandon Megan; Kate must face her sister's wrath when CTU arrives at the Warner House.

Jack takes control of a prisoner and uses strong-arm tactics to try and get key information. Meanwhile, Sherry Palmer, now the ex-wife of President Palmer, makes her return; and Tony interrogates Reza about his business with a known terrorist.

Jack takes Nina on a plane to Visalia as they make plans to raid the building housing her terrorist connection; Sherry creates suspicions for President Palmer that there is a conspiracy in the government against him; Mason reaches out to try and connect with his son before it's too late.

While Nina and Faheen are brought together, Jack and Michelle must try and decipher their conversation in Arabic for any clue to where the bomb is located; Kim and Miguel are questioned by the police for details about a grizzly discovery in the trunk of Gary's car; and Tony interrogates Reza and Bob, who contradict each other about their possible terrorist ties.

Nina looks for a deal from President Palmer to protect her from Jack; Mason wants Tony to interrogate Reza and Bob Warner together; Kate deals with a terrorist looking for key information from her father's files.

Nina tries to turn the tables on Jack before he can get revenge; President Palmer tries to assure the country that the terrorist threat is well under control.

Jack takes Kate to a mosque to help identify a suspected terrorist; Palmer looks beyond the legal ramifications to possibly remove Roger Stanton from his NSA position; and Bob Warner turns violent while being held at CTU.

Jack goes to extreme, life-threatening measures while questioning a suspect. Meanwhile, Palmer continues the interrogation of Roger Stanton no matter how uncomfortable the process.

Jack and Kate discuss a situation in Marie's past. Meanwhile, Jack is still worried over the whereabouts of Kim; and Lynne draws the line about what she will and won't take from a vocal Sherry Palmer.

Jack finally comes across an object that might be a crucial discovery; Palmer questions Sherry about her involvement with a senior staff member; and Mason, without many hours to live, makes a leadership change at CTU.

Jack finally connects with Kim on the phone but has to deliver some devastating news. Meanwhile, Kate begins to feel responsible for Marie's terrorist actions.

Kim sees the mushroom cloud from the nuclear bomb in the far horizon and faces the certainty that her father is dead. Meanwhile, Michelle interrogates Syed Ali after CTU obtains a tape of three high-ranking Middle Eastern officials directing him to detonate the nuclear bomb in Los Angeles.

Jack takes Kate to meet the man who claims the Cyprus audio tape is a fake. Meanwhile, President Palmer and the Vice President disagree over the pending military action.

Jack must save Wallace from an attacking military force, so Wallace can provide evidence that will prevent an unnecessary war. Meanwhile, after the nuclear bomb detonation in California, Palmer orders the Army put on stand-by to help deal with domestic unrest.

With Jack still on the hunt for proof that the Cyprus recording is a fake, President Palmer is torn between reducing U.S. military casualties by committing to a surprise or calling off the attack completely. Meanwhile, Tony tries to find out the cause of bad blood between Michelle and Carrie.

Jack's life hangs in the balance as he's tortured by Kingsley's men. They want the computer chip that will prove the Cyprus recording is a fake. Meanwhile, Chappelle orders Tony to continue processing intel to support a military attack.

When Jack finally takes possession of the computer chip, Tony and Michelle struggle to access the chip's audiofiles in time to prevent a war. Meanwhile, Palmer must face off with cabinet members who are challenging his capacity to continue as President.

Jack finds the man who forged the Cyprus Recording, but encounters resistance to bringing him in. Meanwhile, after Chappelle makes a major announcement at CTU, Tony puts his career on the line to help Jack; and Palmer wins over a critical ally.

Jack attempts to deliver the one person who can help to prevent the military attack now close at hand. Meanwhile, Palmer continues the push to prove the country is going to war based on false evidence and assigns his attorney to find out everything he can about Peter Kingsley, the man who hired the computer hacker.

Jack must persuade an unexpected source to help him take down Peter Kingsley. Meanwhile, Novick, upon learning of some new information, must decide whether or not to assist Jack in his efforts to prove the Cyprus recording was fabricated; and Marie and Kate face off one last time in the shocking season finale.
