About this show

In a small French Alpine village, a seemingly random collection of people return to their homes to be met with shock and confusion: they have all been dead for years. Appearing unaged and completely unaware of their own deaths, the returned attempt to reintegrate with their families and loved ones. But inexplicable and chilling events begin to occur as they grapple with this miraculous and, perhaps, sinister new reality.

Brilliant existential French horror with Mogwai's epic score is Les Revenants. Wrong purchase if dubbed into english. Luckily you caught it before Sundance started censoring and editing all its programming like pbs-no nudity or swears or even "ass and damn" plus 6-7 min commercial breaks with 5 of programming in between.

As good as TV gets! I was hooked just watching the eerie opener. Acting, cinematography, writing, soundtrack, this show has so much to recommend it. Make no mistake, this is not a wrap everything up in a neat little bow, sort of show. Every question you have that gets answered, will bring up 5 more to ponder, so if you are an instant gratification sort of person this will frustrate you. If, on the other hand, you enjoy lush storytelling, that doesn't spoon feed it to you, give this one a try. The only caveat I have is that it has been marketed as a zombie show. Do not watch this expecting gory special effects. This is psychological horror, with very little violence depicted. That said, this show has some of the most chilling moments I have ever seen.

In a world of often badly-written, over-the-top horror stories, The Returned stands out, showing what can be done with great writing, solid acting, and a dose of subtlety. The soundtrack, by Mogwai, really fits the show beautifully as well. Oh, and it's subtitled. I don't see why that should be a problem for anyone but the illiterate, but some reviewers seem to want it to be dubbed. That would be an idiotic travesty, completely running the great dialog.
