Ovgoro

The “Ovgoro” app provides a modern exploration experience of the Lefka Ori, or White Mountains, in the island of Crete (Greece).


“Ovgoro” originates from the Cretan dialect and is used to describe an open space with view.


NO INTERNET IS REQUIRED TO USE THE APP.


The traversing of seven different routes, including the Samaria Gorge, becomes easier and more interesting with the use of your device as a guide. These routes include:


• Samaria Gorge
• Xyloskalo - Gigilos
• Xyloskalo - Kallergi Refuge
• Agios Ioannis - Kakos Poros
• Agios Ioannis - Kormokopos Cave
• Agia Roumeli - Lykos Bay
• Anopolis - Loutro


The app is based on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology and a web of installed beacons.


The beacons have been installed in various points of interest in the routes with various themes, such as the history of the region, the natural environment, culture and architecture.


The system is activated when your device approaches one of these beacons.


Once this happens, the app presents rich information for the point of interest which has been matched with the particular beacon.

The goal of the app is to highlight the routes of the area and encourage various visitor groups to gain new experiences.


The evaluation of the supervisory material was conducted with the valuable support of the Management Body of Samaria National Park.
