About this app

LastQuake is a free, mobile application dedicated to alerting populations and gathering testimonies in real-time when an earthquake occurs. Designed by seismologists, LastQuake is the official app of the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC). Thanks to the participative action of its users, only a few minutes are needed for the EMSC to estimate earthquake effects and notify the population.

╍ NEW VERSION ╍

We're excited to introduce you to this new version of LastQuake, designed to provide an improved user experience and more advanced features for tracking earthquakes in your area and around the world.

What's new in this version:

- A dynamic home page with an interactive map showing the distribution of earthquakes around the world. This feature provides a better understanding of seismic activity in your region and around the world.

- A search function now allows you to quickly find earthquakes by specifying date, magnitude, and geographic region. You can then filter earthquakes based on your personal criteria.

- You can now save earthquakes for quick and easy access to information. This feature allows you to keep track of important earthquakes and their progress.

- You can now customize your notifications to receive alerts according to your preferences: voice alert, earthquakes near you, minimum magnitude, maximum distance, etc.

- Following feedback from users who complained that the home page didn't provide enough information about earthquakes at a glance and that they preferred the earthquake list, we've added the ability to choose which page you land on directly when you open the application (the classic home page or the earthquake list).

- Automatic translation of comments when you click on them.

╍ AN INNOVATIVE EARTHQUAKE DETECTION METHOD ╍

EMSC detects earthquakes using:

∘ Earthquake witnesses, who are the first to feel an earthquake, hence the first informed that an event is happening.
∘ Internet and mobile technologies, which allow rapid information collection of the effects observed by witnesses, who are asked to fill in a questionnaire and share photos and videos.

╍ YOUR INVOLVEMENT MATTERS ╍

LastQuake is a citizen science project. Your contribution helps refine our understanding of earthquake effects while fostering our support in disaster preparation and response.

╍ WHAT IS EMSC? ╍

EMSC is an international non-profit scientific NGO founded in 1975. Based in France, EMSC federates data from the seismological observatories of 86 institutes from 57 countries. While operating a real-time earthquake information service, EMSC advocates for public participation in scientific research. Its core product, LastQuake, paves the way for innovative approaches to building more disaster-resilient communities, making EMSC among the pioneers of disaster apps dedicated to earthquakes and tsunamis.

The app was revised and completely overhauled and now works amazingly on my Pixel 8 Pro running Android 14. I think that the previous version of the app before its redesign just didn't like my phone for some reason. In any event it's alerted me to the several recent quakes in So Cal without fail, and seems to notify me quicker than I ever remember, almost as quick as the USGS MyShake app. I can immediately identify where and how big a quake near me was. Thank you for a great app!!

New version's user interface is nearly unresponsive on Samsung A32 5G handset. It requires repeated "clicking" on Settings to enter the respective screen and further repeated "clicks" to make any changes. Scrolling is difficult too. It feels as if the screen is losing its touch sensitivity while the application is running. I am not having this problem with any other application. UPDATE (2-Sep-2024): EMSC team advised to grant location permission and it worked! Rating changed to 5 stars.

UPDATE : In the majority of cases, bugs are solved when you clearing the cache (settings --> applications --> LastQuake --> storage --> clear cache), reinstalling the application and allowing LastQuake to access your location and send notifications (in the phone and the app settings). Thank you for the update! Stay safe

It works... I guess? Just noticed there is the new UI, and as per suggestions, I deleted the cache and reinstalled the app. Allowed location access and notifications. After this, only one thing changed - the map on the home screen is loading. But still no notifications, it's not possible to refresh earthquakes on the home or earthquakes screen by pulling down, and "See more" coments will show empty screen with 3 buttons that do nothing.
