1. OBJECTIVE
The experiment aims to determine the properties of materials when subjected to compression stresses. The experiment also demonstrates the use of compression plates, manual pump and manometer, which are used to apply the load to the tested specimen. To carry out the experiment, a universal testing machine will be used associated with a compression plate, manual pump, manometer, specimens of different compositions and a dial indicator that will measure the reduction in the length of the specimen as the load increases. is applied.

The experiment consists of applying the load to the test piece until it reduces its length by half. You must use a caliper to measure the dimensions of the test cup before and after the test and calculate the compressive strength for each type of material tested.

At the end of this experiment, you should be able to:

Determine the modulus of elasticity of the materials;

Build “tension x strain” graphs for bodies subject to compression;

Analyze a graph of tension x deformation of bodies subject to compression;

Determine the compressive strength limit of materials;

Analyze the compressive strength of the different materials tested.

2. WHERE TO USE THESE CONCEPTS?
The compressive strength of a material is a mechanical property that measures the ability of this material to resist compressive stresses. A material with low compressive strength can easily fail when subjected to compression stress. On the other hand, if you want to subject a part to large compressive stresses, you must specify a material with high compressive strength. As an example, a piston used in a hydraulic press must have excellent compressive strength. Therefore, knowing the compressive strength of a material is, therefore, an indispensable requirement for those who wish to design and specify structures, equipment and machines used in the most diverse areas.

3. THE EXPERIMENT
In this experiment you will make use of the following instruments: universal machine for testing materials, compression plate, manual pump, test specimens, caliper and dial indicator. The compressive strength of the material is determined using compression plates and the caliper is used to measure the dimensions of the specimen before and after carrying out the test.

By activating the manual pump, the specific load for each type of material will be applied to the test specimen by moving the piston of the universal machine. The load is applied until the specimen reduces its initial length by half, with this variation in length being measured by the dial indicator throughout the test. And when this reduction occurs, the applied load is removed so that the dimensions of the test piece can be measured.

4. SECURITY
The experiment was designed not to bring physical risks, so you will use objects that are not very harmful and light. Even with these precautions, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is extremely important for safety during experiments. In this experiment, the use of a lab coat is recommended.

5. SCENARIO
The experiment features the following materials: universal machine for testing materials, manual pump, dial indicator, test specimens, compression plate and caliper.
