About this app

1. OBJECTIVE
This experiment aims to show how heterogeneous mixtures are made and their identification, perform essential laboratory techniques and create a better perception of the different glassware used in a process of separating heterogeneous mixtures.


At the end of this experiment, you should be able to:

perform a technique for separating a heterogeneous mixture;

describe the process of separating heterogeneous mixtures by simple filtration;

characterize a heterogeneous mixture through its phases.

2.WHERE TO USE THESE CONCEPTS?
The concepts covered in this practice show much of the daily life of industries, where separation methods are extremely important, such as: water filtration before being distributed through city pipes, and the removal of solid particles before the emission of gases into the atmosphere, among others.


3. THE EXPERIMENT
This experiment uses a smooth analytical funnel with a short stem and qualitative filter paper to perform a mechanical separation through gravity filtration (simple). To do this, you will need to use a universal support with a ring. You will separate a heterogeneous mixture composed of certain amounts of an aqueous solution of copper II sulfate at 0.3 mol. L-1 (0.3M) and silicon dioxide.


4. SECURITY
The experiment was designed not to pose toxic risks. Therefore, low concentration and slightly harmful solutions are used. However, even with these precautions thought out and defined, you can only carry out the experiment using the appropriate personal protective equipment. In this experiment, gloves will be used, to avoid any possible cuts or contamination with agents harmful to the skin, and a lab coat will be used to protect the body as a whole.


5. SCENARIO
The experiment environment presents the mechanical filtration apparatus already assembled, where the universal support with muffler and ring will be present. You must select the glassware necessary to carry out the experiment, which, in this case, will be the simple funnel and a beaker. Furthermore, you will be responsible for preparing the mixture of copper sulfate and silicon dioxide solution, before carrying out the filtration process.
