About this app

With this app you can find out more about people's lives and suffering stories at the stumbling blocks, which were laid in memory of the victims of National Socialism.
Stolpersteine is a project by the artist Gunter Demnig that began in 1992. Small memorial plaques, so-called stumbling blocks, laid in the ground are intended to commemorate the fate of the people who were persecuted, murdered, deported, expelled or driven to suicide during the Nazi era. Stumbling blocks are laid in front of the last freely chosen homes of the Nazi victims. A stumbling block contains the name of the victim and the year of birth, often the year of deportation, usually the date and place of death.
Functions of the app: A stumbling block can be scanned with the camera of the mobile phone and the biography of the person being remembered can be retrieved.
Nearby stumbling blocks can be searched for and found using the app's map function.
The app also contains a memorial function. With the help of augmented reality, a candle can be placed on the stumbling block and supplemented with a memorial message and your own name. Other users of the app can then see these candles. The candles remain in virtual reality for a period of seven days.
Cleaning instructions for the stumbling blocks can also be found in the app.
Stolpersteine Digital is an app from the State Commissioner for Civic Education in Schleswig-Holstein in cooperation with the State Center for Civic Education in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the State Center for Civic Education in Bremen. Responsibility for the content of the stumbling blocks lies with the respective state institutions. Dataport AöR is responsible for the graphic design and technical implementation.
