BIBRACTE? WHAT IS THAT ?
It is customary to say that Bibracte is a Gallic town under the forest. In the heart of the Morvan, on Mont Beuvray and in a 1000 hectare forest, nestles a town which welcomed between 5 and 10,000 inhabitants, during the pivotal period of the conquest of Gaul by the Romans. An ephemeral city, capital of the powerful people of the Aedui, which was a center of craftsmanship, commerce and politics of the first order in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC.
Today, you walk through the leveling of ancient walls, homes or public buildings, pass near the remains of a late medieval convent or discover a fountain.
Bibracte is also an archaeological museum that tells you the history of the Gallic city and presents the results of excavations carried out since the 19th century. Every year since 1984, new excavation campaigns have been organized to improve knowledge of the Bibracte site.
