What is the Bible?
The Bible is an account of God's actions in the world and his purposes for all creation. The Bible was composed during the sixteenth century and is the work of more than forty human beings. This is a wonderful collection of 66 books in a wide variety of styles, each containing the message God intended us to follow.
An amazing diversity of literary styles is seen in this collection of texts. It tells many things about the life of Jesus, about the lives of good and bad people, about his battles and travels, and about the activities of the early church. It comes to us in the form of stories and dialogues, proverbs and parables, songs and allegories, history and prophecy.
In general, the narratives in the Bible were not written in the order of events. Rather they were recited over and over again and handed down from one generation to the next before eventually being written down. Yet the same themes occur many times throughout the book. Along with diversity, a unique unity is also seen here.
So what is the Bible? Well, in addition to everything mentioned above, the Bible is:
A guide to living life with purpose. It shows us a right path for the risky journey of life. Or put another way, the Bible is like the anchor of a ship during our voyage on the ocean of life.
Not only this, it is also a storehouse of wonderful stories for kids and adults alike. Do you remember Noah and the Ark? Joseph's coat of many colors? Daniel in the Lion's Den? Jonah and the Fishes? Jesus' parables? These stories emphasize the triumphs and failures of the common people.
It's like a refuge in trouble. People tell how turning to the Bible in pain, in agony, in prison, and in grief has given them strength even in times of despair.
A treasure trove of deep insight into who we are. We are not mindless robots, but we are wonderful creations of a God who loves us and gives us a purpose and a destiny.
It is a resource for everyday living. We find standards for our conduct, ways to know right from wrong, and principles that can help us navigate a confused society where an "anything goes" mentality often exists.
