As of my last update in September 2021, there are 118 known elements, with 94 occurring naturally on Earth and the rest being artificially synthesized in laboratories.

These symbols serve as a shorthand notation for the elements, making it easier to write chemical formulas and reactions. The system of chemical symbols was first proposed by the Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius in the early 19th century.
