Hermes Trismegistus (the triple magician) was the name used by the Ancient Greeks to the Egyptian lunar god Thoth, patron and inspirer of astrology and alchemy which was identified with Hermes in Greek mythology. It was named so by the number of discoveries ascribed to him as the language, the alphabet, geometry, arithmetic, astronomy, medicine, fitness, dance, music, sculpture and any art or science, or even because they believed the triple status as a philosopher, physician and king. It was the symbol of the divine intellect, "the living word" as they called him, incarnating thought.
