DENGUE has become a serious public health problem in our country. The World Health Organization estimates that three billion people are at risk of contracting dengue in the world and that 50 million infections occur each year, with 500,000 cases of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and 21,000 deaths, in children.
In Brazil, since 1986 dengue epidemics have been occurring in the main urban centers of the country, with about 3 million cases. An increase in the severity of the cases has been observed. In the period from 1990 to 2006, there were 6,272 cases of DHF, mainly in adults with 386 deaths.
