An old man had a family of sons who were perpetually quarreling among themselves.

Lying on his death bed, he summoned them all to him to give them some parting advice. He ordered his servants to bring in a bundle of sticks and said to his eldest son, "Break it."

The first son strained and strained, but was unable to break the bundle.

The second son tried very hard but also failed to complete the task.

The third son did no better than his brothers

"Untie the bundles," said the father, "and each of you take one stick." When they had done this, he instructed, "Now, break them," and each stick was easily broken.

He continued, "My sons, if you are of one mind, and unite to assist each other, you will be like this bundle, uninjured by all the attempts of your enemies; but if you are divided among yourselves, you will be broken as easily as these sticks."
