Richard Steiff, who lives in a small village in the German state of Württemberg and attends a vocational school of art in Stuttgart, is fascinated by bears while visiting the zoo in the area. Steiff planned to include movable teddy bears in his aunt's range of rag dolls at his aunt's toy company. He prepared a sample and offered it to the American market. With these first examples, the teddy bears with the code PB 55, which were later made of mohair and bearing the company's emblem, did not attract attention in this market until an American merchant drew the attention of an American merchant at the Leipzig Fair in 1903.
