About this app

If you’ve purchased Struik Nature’s new Sasol Birds of Southern Africa and Southern African LBJs made simple books, then you absolutely MUST download this companion app to take full advantage of the exciting extra content we’ve put together for you.

Download the app for free, and scan the barcodes in the books to listen to the bird calls.

How it works:
• Launch the app on your device and hover your camera over the barcode in the book. Make sure the image is in focus.
• The barcode will scan and bring up the calls associated with that species.
• Press play to listen!

TIP: Use a bookmark or sheet of paper to cover surrounding barcodes, so that you can scan the exact one that you want.

Very few of the calls actually play. The ones with more than one call or song available don't give any trouble, but when they're is only one, it most likely won't play. Since this feature was what made me want to buy the book, I feel more than a little cheated. Another problem is that the scanner sometimes has a lot of trouble focusing on the barcode.

Hi Lidia, thank you for your feedback. Kindly note that an update is in progress and will be released soon, which should resolve any scanning issues you may be experiencing with the bird calls.

Eish. Could you add a "capture" button to the scan interface? I often find myself scanning the wrong bird while trying to align the viewfinder with the correct barcode. Also, is it possible to add some way of browsing the species list? Also - can you please make it stop launching new Chrome tabs every time ANYTHING happens in the app? (it's worth mentioning, in its current state, I am also experiencing all the same technical issues as everyone else. I hope you can get this mess sorted out.)

I was initially very excited about this app. And then I found that in many cases you can play a bird's call only ONCE - and then, the only way to play that call again, is by uninstalling the app and reinstalling it. I kid you not! I tried emailing Struik to report this bug, but unfortunately, after a number of days, they have not even opened the email. The SASOL book is great. This app is a huge disappointment. When can we expect a bug fix?
