Javanese Gending is a musical ensemble that usually features metallophones, xylophones, drums, and gongs. The music created in Javanese Gending comes from a combination of the sounds of gongs, kenongs and other Javanese musical instruments. The rhythm of the music is generally soft and reflects the harmony of life, as is the principle of life generally adhered to by Javanese society.
Sunarto Ciptosuwarso is a Javanese musical activist. Has a long track record in Javanese musical activities and creativity. He is able to play all Javanese gamelan. He is most skilled at playing the bonang and fiddle. Sunarto was born in 1921 in Masaran, Sragen to a farming family but enjoyed Javanese gamelan. Over time, Sunarto, who is familiarly called Pak Cip, enjoyed playing musical instruments and sometimes he neglected school, so he was only able to complete his elementary school education. Since he was a teenager, he has joined a musical group that accompanies the art of kethoprak which performs from one region to another. It was this participation in kethoprak that later autodidactically honed Sunarto's sharp skills in creating and understanding Javanese gending compositions. It was this ability in musical performance that led Sunarto to form a close relationship with Ki Nartosabdho, the performer of the Semarang Ngesti Pandhowo wayang community.
