The Forty Hadiths of Nawawi is a collection of forty-two noble prophetic hadiths compiled by Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi, known as Imam al-Nawawi, in the book "The Forty Hadiths on the Foundations of Islam and the Principles of Rulings," also known as the Forty Hadiths of Nawawi. Imam al-Nawawi explained the reason for compiling the forty hadiths, saying: "Some scholars compiled the forty hadiths on the fundamentals of religion, some on branches of religion, some on jihad, some on asceticism, and some on sermons. All of these are valid objectives, may God be pleased with those who seek them. I have found that compiling forty hadiths is more important than all of this. They are forty hadiths that encompass all of these, and each hadith is a major principle of the religion. Scholars have described it as the foundation of Islam, or half of Islam, or a third of it, or something similar." The Forty Hadiths and the Forties emerged based on a weak hadith that says: “Whoever memorizes forty hadiths concerning the religious affairs of my ummah, Allah, the Almighty, will resurrect him on the Day of Resurrection among the jurists and scholars.”
Imam al-Nawawi also said in the introduction to his book about this hadith and the extent to which he relied on it in compiling the Forty Nawawi Hadiths: “Scholars have agreed on the permissibility of acting upon weak hadiths regarding the virtues of deeds. However, my reliance is not on this hadith, but rather on the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the authentic hadiths: ‘Let the one who is present among you inform the one who is absent,’ and his words: ‘May Allah make prosperous the one who hears my words, memorizes them, and conveys them as he heard them.’” Professor Maher al-Hindi commented on al-Nawawi’s statement, stating that relying on weak hadiths regarding the virtues of deeds is the opinion of the majority and is not agreed upon.
