What is the Bible?
The Bible is an account of God's work in the world, and of His purpose for all creation. The Bible was written over a period of sixteen centuries, and it is the work of more than forty human authors. An absolutely amazing collection of 66 books in very different styles, all containing the message that God wanted to bring to us.
This booklet contains an astonishing array of literary styles. It tells many stories about the life of the righteous, about the corrupt, about battles and journeys, about the life of Jesus, and about the activity of the early church. It comes to us in the form of narratives, conversations, proverbs, songs, and allegories in history and prophecy.
The accounts in the Bible were not generally written down as they occurred. Rather, it was said over and over and handed down to generations over the years, before finally being written down. However, the same themes can be found throughout the book. Besides the diversity, there is also a remarkable unity between the two ends of the book.
So what is the Bible? Well, in addition to all of the above, the Bible is:
A guide to enjoying life to the fullest. It gives us a road map for life's perilous journey. Or put another way, the Bible is a safe haven on our journey through the ocean of life.
Repository of wonderful stories for young and old. Remember Noah and the Ark? Joseph's shirt in many colors? Daniel in the lion's den? Greece and the fish? Like Jesus? These stories stress the triumphs and failures of ordinary people.
A haven in times of trouble. People in physical and mental pain, people in prisons and mourners tell us how the Bible gave them strength in their hour of hardship.
An insight into who we are. We are not meaningless robots, we are wonderful creatures made by a God who loves us and gives us a purpose and a destiny.
A reference book for everyday life. We find standards for our behavior, guidelines for distinguishing right from wrong, and principles to help us in a confused society where "anything goes."
