📖 The Letters of Al-Jahiz 📖

By Abu Uthman Amr ibn Bahr Mahbub al-Kinani al-Laythi al-Basri, known as al-Jahiz

Enjoy reading the Letters of Al-Jahiz with the best offline book app and many other features.

This book includes a collection of rare literary letters from al-Jahiz, which the editor carefully explained, clarifying their vague meanings, commenting on them, and interpreting their verses, hadiths, news, poetry, and proverbs. He also connected them to other books by al-Jahiz, such as al-Bukhala', al-Barsan, al-Arjan, al-Bayan wa al-Tabyin, al-Hayawan, al-Mahasin, and al-Adad, to provide easy access for all those interested in the creative genius of al-Jahiz. While the most prominent feature of al-Jahiz's works is that in these letters, al-Jahiz deviates from this digressive tendency and deliberately specializes.

Each letter is a book in itself, exploring a single topic in a comprehensive, in-depth study that arouses admiration and appreciation for this powerful mind, which delves into the subject and examines it as if it were its sole specialty. He delves deeply into it, summoning evidence to support his ideas, thus highlighting his intellectual strength and inspiring astonishment at its greatness. This power was present in al-Jahiz, a power that subdues the minds of his readers and imposes itself upon them through the soundness of its meaning and the clarity of its proof.

What adds to the importance of these letters is that they preserve for us rare pieces of poetry that are rarely found in other sources, such as the poetry of Abu Dulaf, Ibn Abi Fannan, and others.

- Indescribable pleasure, presented to you on a linguistic platter of pure amber. This Al-Jahiz, with his eyes, seems to be scrutinizing the facts of matters, then returning to his pages to circulate his observations. These letters of his accompanied me for a considerable period of time, and by God, I never grew bored, nor did I ever feel fed up with them. If only we had one like Al-Jahiz in every one of our Arab countries. Bookish Dervish

- A wonderful book, rich in meaning and words. I highly recommend reading it.
Al-Jahiz excelled in his writing and the arrangement of his words and paragraphs. It epitomizes the author's genius and his mastery of similar books that preceded him. Therefore, the reader will find what he seeks in this book.

❇️ Some quotes from the book Letters of Al-Jahiz ❇️

“Envy was the first sin to appear in the heavens, and the first transgression to occur on earth.”

“Not everyone who remains silent about their argument is invalid in their belief, nor is everyone who speaks without proof justified in their claim.”

“A just ruler is one who does not rush to issue a judgment without examining the arguments of the opponents.”

“The hatred of relatives is an intrusive obstacle, while their love for one another is a firm and fundamental foundation.”

“It is claimed that no traitor has ever betrayed except because his ambition was too small to be loyal and his ability to endure hardships in pursuit of noble deeds.”

“The universe and all that the regions of the earth contain, And all that her wings bear to man is provision and enjoyment for a while. However, the closest and most gentle thing to his soul is the female, for she was created for him to find peace with her, and between them was placed affection and mercy."

"So you were unique, unique in your age. You entrusted God's representative with you—your mind—to your whims, and you entrusted him with the reins of your affair. He guided you to the path of safety and delivered you to the praiseworthy outcome."
