KATWARN transmits hazard warnings, recommendations for action, and information to affected citizens in Germany on behalf of authorities and security organizations. KATWARN also acts as a multiplier for warnings from the Federal Government's Modular Warning System (MoWaS / NINA app).
The KATWARN app is provided by CombiRisk Risk-Management GmbH. The content, timing, and scope of the alerts are determined solely by the authorized authorities and security organizations that use KATWARN, not by CombiRisk.
Since responsibility for warnings in Germany is distributed among various agencies depending on the hazard situation, the use of KATWARN may vary regionally. Please contact your local district or city for information on the systems used locally.
KATWARN provides location-based notifications about hazards such as major fires or extreme weather events. Users can choose to receive alerts for their current location and up to seven additional locations of their choice. This selection can be changed, adjusted, or deactivated at any time.
The app offers the following features:
• Active notification (push alerts) about hazards for up to eight locations: in addition to your current location (the "guardian angel"), you can select up to seven other locations
• Postcode-specific warnings for the selected locations with warning texts and color-coded alert levels
• Continuous, anonymized updates of location information, eliminating the need for manual location input
• Immediate notification upon entering a current hazard zone
• Free topic subscriptions (e.g., for food recalls) via the KATWARN website
• Energy-efficient location tracking via base stations and Wi-Fi access points (not GPS) minimizes battery drain
• Feedback function for sending feedback to the app provider
A working data connection (Wi-Fi or mobile network) is required to receive warnings and information.
