Ever sat in a trad session and wondered what was the name of that great tune someone just played? Well now you can search a database of over 23,000 tunes from your device BY PLAYING!

Hold your device up to a melody instrument such as the tin-whistle, flute, concertina or uilleann pipes, tap record and the melody will be extracted and submitted to the tunepal.org search engine for matching.

Matching tunes are downloaded to your device, where you can view and edit the notation or the stave, email the tune, post it to facebook or play it back using the high quality playback engine based.

Ratings and reviews

This app has been an invaluable resource over the years. But since the major update removed the ability to filter by tune type, my results are clogged with results that are the wrong type of tune. Update: Except I just noticed that when I hit record, a toast pops up saying that it's filtering by tune type, and it's the wrong type of tune. So where can I change that‽

Changed review from 5 stars: The edit function doesn't work on the latest androids. This is a massive part of how I use the app. It worked briefly after some recent updates but it's gone again. Old review: Yeah, if you play trad, get this. Identification of tunes is really good but more importantly for me, I have all the sheet music of the tunes I'm learning (which is constantly changing) on my phone with an mp3 midi attached to it. So god damn handy.

Cannot identify slow airs, selecting both reels and waltzes as potential matches. Provided interesting new tune suggestions, but none close to a match. I really liked the fact that standard notation was provided for attempted matches, but the match engine doesn't work for the slow airs I presented for identification, despite uncomplicated violin melody over acoustic guitar. Tunepal appears to hear fingerpicking of the guitar harmony, and ignores the much louder melody line in the violin.
