About this app

Do you sometimes have problems with small rodents, such as voles and / or mice, or beaked mice that enter the woodshed, summer cottage or basement? With the help of this app, you can easily report your observations.

When you have observed occurrence indoors, you note in the app which species you have seen, when you have seen it, where in the country, in what type of house / outhouse and what weather conditions prevailed at the observation. You can also upload pictures, for example if you are unsure of which species it is about and you can leave comments.

To help you, you have a species list and descriptions of species groups as well as the phone's GPS function together with a map to place the observation correctly geographically. The observations are then uploaded to a national database run by the Department of Game, Fish and Environment, SLU, Umeå. This requires that you have a login account. You get the account on the app's home page.

You can also report to the website of Mus i Hus at https://mus-i-hus.slu.se.

Small rodents are important pests and hosts for zoonoses, ie. diseases spread from animals to humans. Outbreaks of disease in most cases require close contact between animals and humans. However, our knowledge of environmental conditions that force small mammals indoors is very limited. In Sweden, for example, Deteriorated snow properties (caused by rain on snow) help to force forest vultures indoors. With the help of the Mouse in House app, we hope to gain improved knowledge about small rodent occurrence "indoors", in our homes, storage and outbuildings. The information reported will significantly increase our knowledge of a) the ecology of small rodents and b) factors behind outbreaks of zoonotic diseases.
