I'm so happy I found this from the clublexus forum. I want to cry. I was originally able to play audio by using the Sound Assistant app to tweak Android's settings to allow multiple audio sources to play at once, then I would just play a silent track on Spotify. That worked for a few months then randomly stopped working recently. This seems to do basically the same thing except way better because it automatically resumes.

Finally a solution. This app should've never existed. Because it's bonkers silly that people have this issue to begin with. And for years no one on the Toyota side (seems like this is mostly an issue with how Toyota coded Android Auto) never bothered to fix it. Likely because they think there's nothing to fix. But it's silly to be so narrow minded and not think of countless situations where you should be able to control the volume without an active AA source. Thank you for coming up with this.

Exactly what I needed. I like to play music from YouTube via Firefox, but couldn't adjust the volume with my car's volume buttons (because, like, why would they ever let you adjust the sound playing through your car's speakers if it's not a paid Google app?). Downloaded this, started it on Android Auto, and can now play music from my phone and (gasp) turn down the volume. Happy to pay $1 to a developer who understands users' needs.
