The medina is a fortified medieval citadel that dates back to the times of the Berber Empire; its very crowded labyrinthine streets are a succession of souks (markets), which sell fabrics, ceramics and jewels. Visible even from a great distance, the Moorish minaret of the 12th century Koutoubia mosque is considered one of the symbols of the city.
