What does this app offer beyond what is offered by similar apps in the store?

- 1D as well as 2D bin packing
- The possibility to change the algorithm used to find the solution. Minimizing the number of used bins is not always the only objective. In some situations, managing the space is also important, such as compactness of leftovers … The user can thereby explore the differences between the algorithms and choose whatever method suits him better.


Description :

This app is a bin packing simulator that can be used for optimizing sheet metal cutting as well as many industrial applications such as filling up containers and loading trucks with weight capacity constraints among many others… Technically if we hope for a better solution to the bin packing problem, computational time increases drastically as soon as instances get larger in number. The objective is: find the fewest bins that will hold all the items.
This app offers fast and near-to-optimal solutions using simple heuristics. The user can choose from a list of algorithms to find a satisfying solution. For 1D bin packing, the algorithms labeled as recommended are guaranteed to give better results. For 2D bin packing, none is guaranteed to provide better results. Rotation of items in the 2D case is allowed.


Terminology:
First Fit : places item where it first fits
Best Fit: places item where it leaves the minimum free space
Worst Fit: places item where it leaves the maximum free space
Next Fit: places item in the current bin
Smallest Side Fit: places item where it leaves the minimum leftover on one of the sides.
