How does the resistor color code work?
Resistor values โโare often indicated by color codes. Nearly all lead resistors with power ratings of up to one watt are marked with a color band. Coding is defined in the international standard IEC 60062. This standard describes the marking code for resistors and capacitors. It also includes numeric codes, such as often used for SMD resistors. Color codes are given by several bands. Together they determine the value of resistance, tolerance and sometimes the level of reliability or failure. The number of bands varies from three to six. At a minimum, two bands show resistance values โโand one band functions as a multiplier. The resistance value is standardized, these values โโare called preference values.
