Epicurus (341 BC - 270 BC) was an ancient Greek philosopher. Founded his own school of philosophy, in the name Garden of Epicurus, which is considered the most well-known schools of Greek philosophy.
Was an Athenian citizen, son of Neocles and Chairestratis. His father, an Athenian citizen of the municipality Gargittou hailing from the old illustrious Athenian race of Filaidon participated in the colonization of Samos, where Epicurus raised ("Assistant Neocleous and Chairestratis, Athenian municipalities Gargittios, genus of Filaidon .. . klirouchisanton Athenians Sammon Ekeithe trafinai "- Diogenes Laertius 10.1). The Assistant started coming early in intense contact with the philosophy of Nafsifani the neighboring island Teos, which set him apart from any Platonic doctrine and turned to theories of Democritus. At age 18 he went to Athens to military and political term with comedian Menander. For the next fifteen years of his life have not survived enough information. Later, he created his own cycle thinking in Mytilene and Lampsacus after. He returned to Athens in 307/6 BC at the age of 34, and bought an area in Athens between Dypilon and the Academy, where it housed his philosophical school - the Garden of Epicurus. He taught for 35 years following a quiet and simple life. Were surrounded by men, women, prostitutes and slaves, who participated equally in the Epicurean Garden. Epicurus died in 270 BC at the age of 72 years.
