About this app

ELEVATOR MECHANIC EXAM PREP: PASS YOUR STATE LICENSING EXAM

The only exam prep app built for elevator mechanic state licensing exams. Your exam tests ASME A17.1 Safety Code, NEC Article 620 electrical requirements, OSHA standards, and mechanical systems. This app covers all of it.

TRACTION VS HYDRAULIC COMPARISON

Traction elevator: steel ropes and sheave driven by electric motor. Geared traction for slower speeds, gearless for high-rise. Counterweight reduces motor load. No practical speed limit.

Hydraulic elevator: pump, jack, and oil raise the car. Gravity controls lowering. Types: in-ground direct acting, holeless, roped hydraulic. Maximum travel approximately 50 feet.

Safety devices compared side by side including governor and safeties (traction) vs lowering valve and rupture valve (hydraulic), buffer types, and ASME A17.1 inspection intervals.

ASME A17.1 CODE REFERENCE

Pit: minimum 2-foot depth, lighting at top of ladder, stop switch within 2 feet, ladder required if pit exceeds 35 inches. Machine room: minimum 7-foot headroom, temperature 50 to 90 degrees F, disconnect switch within sight of equipment. Hoistway: fire-resistive construction, no combustible materials. Inspection intervals: periodic inspection annually, safety tests and governor test every 5 years.

SAFETY DEVICE GUIDE

Governor: centrifugal, activates at overspeed, trips car safety. Car safety: grips guide rails. Instantaneous for lower speeds, progressive for higher speeds. Buffer: oil (traction) or spring (hydraulic). Door interlock: prevents movement unless hoistway door is locked. Pit stop switch: breaks control circuit.

1,000+ PRACTICE QUESTIONS

ELECTRICAL THEORY AND NEC (30%): Three-phase power, motor theory, motor control circuits, NEC Article 620, grounding and bonding, branch circuits, GFCIs in machine rooms.
