About this app

The VRN eTarif.
Only the straight line counts.

Simple, cheap and fair:
This is the new electronic tariff - eTarif for short - for the entire VRN area, which is billed according to linear kilometers.

Your advantages:
- Simply get in and drive off – without knowing the fare and without cash
- You only pay for the shortest distance (as the crow flies) between the start and destination stops.
- Convenient eTarif app with departure information
- Guaranteed to be inexpensive with a cost airbag thanks to a daily and maximum monthly guarantee
It's that easy:
- Install the free eTarif app on your smartphone (Android or IOS) and register once.
- Start the app and log in with your smartphone before you start your journey.
- Your valid travel authorization is on your smartphone and can be shown at a check.
- It is possible to change trains without having to register and deregister again.
- After getting off, log out and the price of your journey will be displayed.
- You can conveniently pay your bill monthly by direct debit or credit card – with a cost limit thanks to the daily and monthly maximum price. Because with the eTarif, the prices of all VRN trips per day or per calendar month are summarized and a maximum of the daily or monthly fixed price is charged if this is cheaper for you.
Register now for the eTarif and always pay exactly as much as you drove: www.vrn.de/luftlinie
The VRN eTarif app is an offer from Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH (rnv)

I don't comment on apps, but this one is catastrophic. It requires constant Internet connection to validate the trips. If it ends in a zone with poor connection the maximum amount is charged. Use it outside the city center (where the City-Tarif applies, anyways) and you may be charged 10 times the usual fee. PS.: The FAQ says you have 30 minutes to get a working connection. It is false. PS.2: One can complain by mail and they answer quickly. Still, it is extremely annoying doing that every time.

Every attempt to add payment methods fails, be it with different cards or with SEPA mandate. So, pretty useless to have a ticket purchasing app where you can't, you know, pay for the tickets. Perhaps pre-payment though bank transfer works, but it takes up to three days according to their email, which makes me not particularly inclined to even try when I have to travel today. Moreover, the error message for the payment methods is in German even if the payment portal is in English. I can understand it, but not exactly user-friendly.

So far so good. But good God, do not select "allow all the time" under Location Permission. It will bring your phone to a crawl. Update: the "Journey Planning" function is a joke. Way too difficult to use. Not intuitive at all. So much for being a "smart app." Update (11.7.23): horrible app. Needs a complete overhaul; this time by someone who actually knows how to design functional apps.
